Staving Off Frustration

Words of wisdom to keep things in perspective

I have had a frustrating few weeks. In fairness, they have been filled with amazing blessings—far more generous than I’ve merited. But they have also contained more than the usual amount of frustrations, moments when I felt like giving up on several important things in my life. At the moment, I don’t want to linger on the problems. A few of them persist, and to share them here does not help me to... READ MORE

A Mother's Saint

Happy Feast Day St. Monica!

Many of us claim her as a personal patron. She’s known for being one of the ultimate “Catholic Moms” - the one who prayed a lifetime for a husband who experienced a deathbed conversion…

the one who never gave up hope for the salvation of a son whose life had given way to debauchery…

the one who went to her deathbed with the words, “Son, nothing in this world now affords me delight. I do not know... READ MORE

Back to School…Already?!

When do you head back?

It snuck up on me this year in the haze of work-related business and our Eric’s return home from his summer internship in New York City, but yesterday it was unavoidable:

Adam’s first day of his senior year of high school.

Ouch.

Long term readers may remember that I’m notorious for hating the first day of school. One of my best friends makes me an annual “back to school care package” to soothe my... READ MORE

When Plans Go out the Window

Why bother?

Today was supposed to go so differently.

Today was planned to be the day I got my act together so that I could depart tomorrow on our planned family vacation with a clear conscience. In my head, I had 72 hours of “to do” items crammed into a twenty-four hour day. I would be efficient, deliberate, and definitely cheerful.

Somewhere shortly after undertaking the first “to do” item, things started to... READ MORE

Moms at Midlife

What support do you need?

Catholic author Elizabeth Foss is beginning work on a potential new book project and she wants your input:

If you were looking for a book on midlife, what would you want to read there? What would you want that book to address? How would you want to come away from the book? I’m really serious, friends. Really, really serious. Shall we make this book come to life? Together? Tell me what you’re thinking.

Head on over and let her know your thoughts.

Mad after Mass?

What do you do when your find yourself angry at Church?

I’d like to start this column by asking you to pray for me. On my “to do” list for this week is attending the sacrament of reconciliation. So before you recommend that as a remedy for my poor attitude, know that I agree with you and that I’m working on it…

Without going into any of the details of what happened, I’d like to share with you that I left church on Saturday night after our vigil Mass feeling... READ MORE

Pampered Mother

Is it wrong to care?

Every time we go to the orthodontist, I am reminded how bad my nails look. In an office filled with working women (the orthodontist, the hygienists, the office manager), I suddenly notice how nicely groomed and manicured everyone appears and how I haven’t had a manicure in… hmmm, can’t remember.

I generally comment to the front desk lady how nice she looks, how I need to get around to doing that,... READ MORE

Second Child

How has your parenting style changed?

“Second Child’s Mom” wrote me this past week and shared this photo of a golden-haired cutie snacking off of the floor. To protect the innocent, she shall remain nameless, but I will say that I personally know this mom well and can totally vouch for her parenting skills.

The photo made both of us chuckle. This is “Second Child Mom’s” toddler who came after a ten year wait and struggle with infertility.... READ MORE

What Moms Really Want

An annual reminder...

This morning, I had what has become a semi-regular May occurrence in my life: an interview about “what moms really want for Mother’s day”.

In preparing to celebrate this weekend with my Mother-in-law here locally, I’m reminded now more than ever that the gift of “presence” is so precious, especially as our own moms get older. But my research for today’s interview also reminded me that “absence” can... READ MORE
