Cheryl Cole has revealed that she is only returning to the X Factor because judge and friend Gary Barlow asked her to.

The 29-year-old singer took to Twitter after Simon Cowell tweeted 'Welcome back Cheryl' to insist that she hadn't make the decision to please her former boss, who axed her from her judging role on X Factor USA.

She instead wrote: 'I saw Simon's tweet. I'm not doing this for him. I am doing this for Gary as he's my friend and he asked me to do it.'

Cheryl and Gary were pictured over the weekend arriving by helicopter at the vast Boughton House estate in Northamptonshire to help the Take That star choose which of his contestants to take through to the live finals.

The Girls Aloud singer has plenty of experience in this department, as Cheryl was a judge on the show from 2008 until 2010 before accepting a role on the first series of the US version of the show from which she was unceremoniously axed by Cowell.

Cheryl looked ready for business in a monochrome ensemble and high heels as she arrived at the estate, wearing a T-shirt shaped blouse and a pencil skirt. She finished off her look with a high bun on top of her head, oversized sunglasses and plum-coloured lips.

Gary publicly thanked her for her contribution, Tweeting: 'Thank you @CherylCole for all your help this weekend. The contestants and I loved having you there xx. (sic)'

The arrival of Cheryl shocked many fans, who had been expecting Gary's Take That bandmate Robbie Williams to once again join him as a mentor.

However, Robbie will instead host a masterclass for this year's hopefuls during the live audition rounds as well as performing live on the show to promote his forthcoming solo album.

Singer Ne-Yo will be helping Nicole Scherzinger choose between the Boys in Dubai, Tinie Tempah is teaming up with Tulisa to pick the Girls in the Caribbean and Louis Walsh will be joined by another ex-judge, Sharon Osbourne, to choose between the groups in Las Vegas.

Gary, 41, is said to have tried to conceal his mentor choice from X Factor boss Simon Cowell.

The plans were so cloak and dagger that Barlow went to the extent of making people believe that Robbie Williams would be he surprise mentor.

An X Factor source told The Sun newspaper: 'Only Gary’s intimate inner circle know. He hasn’t even discussed it with Simon or ITV bosses. It’s been seriously top secret stuff.

'They’re all under the impression it’s going to be Robbie. No one even noticed the dates for the recording clashed with Robbie’s new solo tour.'

Gary apparently got Cheryl to agree to the show as the two stars relaxed over a drink following their duet at the Buckingham Palace concert he organised in June for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Cheryl recently told Jonathan Ross that although she is in contact with Simon, they are far from being friends.

She said: 'I do talk to him every now and again. We're frenemies.'

The Under The Sun singer will not be the only big name to join the show at the later stages.

Soulful star Ne-Yo will help out Nicole Scherzinger and the Boys during her stop in Dubai, and Tinie Tempah will team up with Tulisa and the Girls in the Caribbean.

Louis Walsh, who is mentoring the Bands, will be joined by ex-judge Sharon Osbourne in Las Vegas.

I wish Gary Barlow would pay his taxes! He having a great time in his helicopter at our expense, while we pay our taxes he avoids his.

Of course she should get paid, just like all the others on the payrole. Why is it only Cheryl who shouldn't get paid for working. Walsh, Barlow, Scherzinger, Oldzinger, Tulisa, Jeri, Mel B and all the rest get paid so why is it greedy and she should give it all to charity when it's Cheryl? Maybe all the rest of them should give their pay to charity as well. Goodness know Cheryl does enough for charity through the Cheryl Cole Foundation in conjunction with The Princes Trust to help deprived children and it's all on the record through properly audited accounts, take a look.

I thought XF was Cowells through his production company SiCo. Or has that changed. Nothing happens on XF without Cowells nod.

So, if she's doing it for a "mate" will she be foregoing some of her pay and giving it to a charity after all she's not doing it for the money is she!!
