Warning about VIzio Co-Star - READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY IT. I ordered - not pre-ordered--it said they were in stock. 5 weeks later I get my co-star and it's a piece of crap. Firmware is completely broken and underdeveloped. It took me 2 hours to login and setup the dumb thing. I never could get my netflix account activated on it. You search for something and it can't even respond to the typing. I type in my email, and it types a thousand g's in a row, and you can't stop it. Have to back out and try again.

I emailed customer support. They say sorry, please call for customers support. Hassle!! So i call, and after waiting on hold to get their "proud to be in South Dakota Customer Service" i get nothing but attitude and ill-treatment from customer service.

He said under no circumstances, even though it's defective, will they return the product without charging me 10% restocking fee and return shipping. Such a pile of BS - they send me a product with broken firmware and then charge me to return it.

My first experience with Vizio -- and my last. Save yourself the trouble--go buy the Sony Google TV! Or get a Tivo. Or a Roku--do anything but waste your time and money on Vizion Co-Star.

    Awkward and frustrating.

The remote is clumsy. It is too big, the keyboard misses keypresses, and the track pad is horrible for clicking buttons on web pages...

...which you have to do because the Amazon Instant app is not an app, but the Amazon website!

Also, the device is slow to boot and is not designed to be an always-on set-top-box. It runs too hot for that. Warm to the touch. There is also no LED to indicate when the device is on -- which is hard to determine when there is no input signal.

During my time with it it had many app crashes. Flickering Netflix. And, again, a very frustrating Amazon Instant experience.

Its remote codes worked for my television and TiVo HD... but was far too delayed to control the TiVo properly. Nor does it integrate with the TiVo such that you could see your "now playing list" within the Co-Star interface.

This device doesn't do anything I was hoping for very well.

As an owner of the Logitech Revue and a Sony Internet TV Blu-Ray Player, I was very excited to receive my Pre-ordered Co-Star in the mail. Unfortunately upon connection I realized that this is no where near as reliable as the other two Google TV boxes I have. I was unable get the remote to work with my Sony TV or my Westinghouse TV, both worked flawlessly with the other two boxes. I consulted customer service and they were not responsive and told me that unfortunately "Not all univeral remotes work with all TVs" and to "contact the manufacturer of your TV to get a manual code". Well I did that and was told that codes are different for each brand of remote and Vizio should handle it.

I would, at least at the moment, suggest you get a refurb Logitech Revue or Sony Internet TV box rather than this, as the customer services is seriously lacking and the device just does not meet the expectations of even a current Google TV user.

I'll write more about this later and update it as I go, but I could not be happier with this device. I'm still learning all of the ins and outs of some of the content options, but it's still really great.

I'm using mine primarily as a streaming box, not as a portal for cable, and it is quite great at that. Great quality video good performance.

One of the only things I dislike is up to Google, not Vizio. When controlling from a tablet or phone, I shouldn't just get a static set of buttons. I ought to be able to control things in a much cleaner way. I'm using a touch screen device, so make it feel like native content. Navigate on the phone screen, not by pushing up and down and navigating on the tv.

I decided to hack out a review of the Vizio Co-Star for The Verge simply because I haven't really seen any yet. I hope that many others find the time to leave their impressions as well. If you don't want to read to the end, the skinny of it is that I feel that GTV is not ready for prime time, especially as put forth in the Co-Star, and I am sending my unit back to Vizio for a refund (minus a 10% restock fee, of course.)

The worst aspect of the Vizio Co-Star has to be its wonky remote. Large, rectangular, and angular it is a cacophony of buttons and touchpad that make little sense together. The QWERTY keyboard lacks discrete numeric keys and the layout is so wide that is difficult to type with both hands. To access special characters, including numbers, you must HOLD (not tap, but actually hold) the FN key as you type, making the process of entering passwords or email addresses tedious. The touchpad is questionable, and will often not register taps when trying to activate icons. The buttons on the front are also in odd positions, and the lack of a backlight as well as a low-contrast color scheme makes using the remote in low-light conditions nearly impossible.

As for the software, apps crash frequently. (And this is after running the update that appeared immediately after powering on for the first time.) The Amazon Instant is not an actual app, but rather a link to the Amazon Instant store webpage, requiring a wonky sign-on to view content. The same can be said for their "TV Apps" which are little more than links to web-optimized TV websites. M-GO, as of launch, was inoperable. And Netflix uses an older menu style, not the superior view utilized by the XBOX 360 or even the Roku.

Attaching pass-through devices and controlling them with the remote is difficult, at best, as it seems Vizio hasn't done a great job of updating its IR codes database. Several of the products I tried to use, including a Samsung TV, simply didn't work with the remote. That could be user error, but then again this is supposed to be an easy consumer device, and it's anything but.

Overall, though, I feel the GTV platform is just as much to blame as Vizio. The GTV platform is the strangest cross between a HTPC and a media streamer, with the complexity of the HTPC superseding the ease-of-use of devices like the Apple TV. It's as though Google's engineers threw everything they wanted in an HTPC into the kitchen sink, hit the disposal button, and walked out with a strange, chopped-up mound of code at the end. It may do everything they say it will, but most consumers will never figure out how to make it work right.
