Gzowski & Chuvalo At The Movies

Broadcast Date: Jan. 26, 1977

Drawing on his 20-plus years in the ring, Chuvalo turns movie critic in reviewing the authenticity of Sylvester Stallone's new blockbuster film Rocky. While Chuvalo says parts of Stallone's character are real, he admits to being most impressed with Burgess Meredith, Stallone's trainer in the film. "He was the most authentic of all the characters," Chuvalo tells Peter Gzowski in this clip from 90 Minutes Live. Overall, though, Chuvalo gives the movie his thumbs up: "It's good entertainment. It's a good picture."

Gzowski & Chuvalo At The Movies

• Sylvester Stallone was nominated for Best Actor at the 1977 Academy Awards, but lost out to Peter Finch for his role in Network. Talia Shire (Best Actress), Burt Young and Burgess Meredith (Best Supporting Actor) also picked up nominations. Rocky went on to win the award for Best Picture, beating out Network, All The President's Men, Taxi Driver and Bound for Glory. It also won the award for Best Director (John G. Avildsen).

• Chuvalo was no stranger to motion pictures, appearing in several films between 1978 and 2000. His most notable roles were in David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) and Prom Night III: The Last Kiss (1989).
• After Rocky, Stallone's next role was the lead in Norman Jewison's F.I.S.T.. The film, a Godfather-like epic about the labour movement in the U.S., saw Stallone play Johnny Kovak, a rising leader in the truckers' union during the Depression.
