Mexico keen to host World Cup for third time in 2026 but face competition from USA

Mexico are preparing a bid to host the 2026 World Cup and are expecting tough competition from the United States.

If successful, it would be the third time the Central American country has hosted the tournament after staging the 1970 and 1986 World Cups.

No other country has ever hosted the finals three times.

The last time: Diego Maradona won the World Cup with Argentina the last time it was held in Mexico in 1986

Mexican football federation (FEMEXFUT) president Justino Compean told local media: 'Mexico was a great host in 1970 and 1986, so we are indeed going to bid.

'We want to have the World Cup here again, but we know there will be strong competition from the United States.

'Our football infrastructure keeps growing and that means hosting the World Cup in Mexico is feasible.'

Putting their case forward: Mexico will have to put their case to host the World Cup to FIFA

Mexico initially put in a bid for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, which will be hosted by Russia and Qatar respectively, but pulled out of the running before the vote.

Compean said a World Cup in the US would still be good for Mexico.

He added: 'We are three hours from the border and we have millions of our nationals living on the other side so it would be like we were a home team.'

An absolute disgrace that the Word Cup hasn't graced England since 1966. Got some of the best stadiums in the world, good infrastructure and also the founders of the game . That Blatter guy is a complete joke and should be removed from his position immediately. Just look at how England hosted the Olympics/ Paralympics... Pure Class!!!

Conzaradikal, St Albans & Guy Birmingham......Mexico has only been awarded the World Cup once.....in 1970, where we witnessed the greatest team ever seen.....Brazil........in 1986, the tournament was supposed to be in Columbia (South America, not Central or North), but they had a few problems........Mexico stepped in and hosted it.........

a disgrace if it goes therefora 3rd time before uk/england gets a chance to hold it again. england could easily hold it all the stadia are there as are the communications and facilities for teams etc. if you did it as a UK / Ireland bid think of the stadiums that could be used. millenium at cardiff. glasqow has 3 irelands aviva. would rather italy have it again than mexico

Chelsboy123 I think you should look it up - Mexico is most definitely in North America. That's why it's national football team is governed by the North American football union. It is also in the north American free trade zone. Seriously before calling someone an idiot you should check your facts otherwise you end up looking an idiot yourself.
