NORFOLK (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. Second Fleet (C2F) Sailors took to the streets of Norfolk July 28, during an "Adopt-a-Spot" community cleanup project.

The 2nd Fleet First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) Sailors cleaned trash along a two mile stretch of Hampton Blvd.

"We really enjoy being able to keep Norfolk clean," said Intelligence Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Tiffany Johnson, 2nd Fleet FCPOA president. "Once a month we come out and clean up litter and debris off the streets and sidewalks because we want to be good stewards of the environment."

While picking up items such as paper plates, plastic bags, and cardboard, the Sailors were thanked by the community during the event.

"It made my day when a member of the community came up to us and thanked us for helping to maintain the city," said Information Systems Technician 1st Class (SW/AW) Jonathan Armstead Jr.

Master Chief Information Systems Technician (SW/AW) Yvonne Kitchen, Second Fleet Staff command master chief, was pleased with how well the FCPOA worked together to make a difference in the community.

"It's always amazing to see our Sailors take charge and do their part to give back to this community that has always been there for us," said Kitchen "I am truly grateful and proud of the FCPOA for their support of 'Adopt-A-Spot' over the last couple years."

With 12 bags of trash filled with paper cups, wrappers, boxes, metals, cans, and jars, the Sailors felt a sense of accomplishment in giving back to the environment.

"Cleaning up the environment today is important because we want our children to enjoy a cleaner planet in the future," said Information Systems Technician 1st Class (SW) Cortez Mounger. "It's all about taking a few minutes out of your day to dispose of trash properly whether you're at home, work or outside."
