Regrets: Dina Lohan confessed she would think twice if she had the chance to stop Lindsay from being a child star

Her daughter was once a much-loved starlet who seemed to have the world at her feet.

But Dina Lohan has admitted she regrets getting her daughter Lindsay into show business after her spectacular fall from grace.

The Mean Girls favourite could face the full force of the law again after being arrested on September 19 for allegedly hitting a man's leg with a borrowed Porsche - the latest in a long line of incidents involving the star.

And the 50-year-old has admitted she regrets pushing Lindsay into starring in 60 commercials and Parent Trap by the time she turned 11.

She told the New York Daily News: 'I was born into the business.

'My mother was an entertainer. It was natural.

'But yes, in the next life, I might not do it.'

Lindsay's arrest and subsequent booking for the misdemeanour offence of leaving the scene of an accident could trigger a probation violation relating to her 2011 jewellery theft case, as one of the conditions of probation is that she obeys all laws

The alleged victim Jose Rodriguez was taken to a hospital, and he later claimed she 'reeked of alcohol'.

Dina conceded she is far from proud of her daughter's multiple arrests and unpredictable antics, but refused to shoulder any of the blame.

She said: 'I'm certainly not making excuses for Lindsay's behaviour. But she's a 26-year-old woman.'

Party girls: But Dina said she only went on the tiles with Lindsay to keep an eye on her

Party girls: The celebrity mom, 50, denied she ever partied with her daughter - insisting she only wanted to keep an eye on her

Instead she pointed the finger of blame at her daughter's eccentric assistant and constant companion Gavin Doyle.

She said: 'I have questions about Gavin. There have been numerous incidents with Lindsay where he has been present.

'He was with her recently at [millionaire Sam Magid's] party when she was falsely accused of burglarising jewellery. It's all very sketchy.'

But Lindsay's father Michael hit back: 'Gavin keeps Lindsay straight. He is always there for her. He is one of the most honest and caring people around Lindsay right now. Whenever he talks to me, he is never drunk. Dina can’t stand that he speaks to me, is all.'

After claiming that Lindsay needs to get away for a while, he added to the website: 'Dina said that if Lindsay keeps talking to me and Gavin keeps talking to me that Dina will not let Lindsay come to the house and see her brothers and sister.'

Long Island, New York resident Dina also said the long held belief she would indulge in wild nights with her daughter were wide of the mark.

In the genes: Dina flipped off Dr Phil McGraw during an interview on his show

In the genes: Dina flipped off Dr Phil McGraw during an interview on his show that aired earlier this month

She said: 'I don't party with Lindsay. In the early years, I would go with her to clubs, because I wanted to see who the enablers were.'

Dina hit the headlines herself this week for her own erratic behaviour.

She flipped off Dr Phil McGraw during an interview on her show, the lowest point in an altogether shambolic appearance.

Her ex-husband Michael Lohan also accused her of being drunk, but she claimed clever editing was to blame.

Dina, you have been "partying" together when both your daughters were teenagers!!! What kind of mother takes her young daughters to a high profile night club in NYC at 2am??? Now you regret it??? What did you think it was going to happen? That sort of path does not open doors to Ivy league!!!

Another life??? I thought Lindsay was a follower of the YOLO (You only Live Once) tattoo trend/mantra. I'm so confused. Lindsay says she will only go through life once, but her mom says that she will come back from the dead. I need to lie down and figure this one out.

Dina should have been Lindsay's mother instead of her BFF, and maybe Lindsay wouldn't have turned out the way she did.

She was tanked on the Dr. Phil show, but you got a real feel for what kind of person she is like in that she seemed like she was overdoing her bid to be rebellious, flippant, and overall trying to come off edgy. Which totally failed...as you could see she was in an altered state...if not altered...surreal. You begin to see that Lindsey didn't have a chance with the Mother and Father she had. I used to be critical of Lindsey when I saw her in the news...and as an adult she is responsible for her actions, but I see how she has been moved down the path she has taken through the selfish and destructive path her parents exposed her to.

Sad family. Father a total bad boy, mother total wreck. I saw the interview with dr. Phil yesterday. Wow, Dina, you really need professional help.

'I was born into the business. My mother was an entertainer. It was natural. How about the more accurate statement that she saw dollar signs - lots of them?

The poor mother mustn't blame herself, she wouldn't have known at the time that her daughter will end up on drink, drugs ect. But on the other hand... she must be a bad role model for her! She looks just as bad as Lindsay!

Her mother and father are 80% of her problem. Two losers! They both cannot help themselves and stay out of the spotlight. When Britney Spears broke down her Dad and Mom quietly stepped in and saved her. These two people could never do that. Everything is always about them.

How is it the assistant's fault? He would be paid for assisting, not being a baby sitter, correct? (and why does a barely working "actress" need an assistant anyway?). Blame, blame, blame. But more to the point does this woman ever wear anything appropriate? Every picture of her I see her clothes are too young for here, tacky and NEVER fit correctly. The picture of her flipping of Dr. Phil? Priceless. I only wish she had the grace to be embarrassed by it.
