There's no denying it's an emotional rollercoaster on the dancefloor.

But Dancing With the Stars contender Bristol Palin has also endured a battle on the scales.

However, the daughter of controversial politician Sarah Palin was last night radiating with confidence as she took to the stage to compete for the all-star DWTS season premiere.

She also revealed her weight loss secrets, saying she 'cut the c**p' from her diet, and son Tripp is now running around as he 'thinks he's a teenager' to keep her on her toes.

During her first venture onto the show in 2010, Bristol actually piled on the pounds, despite the fact that most people lose weight through the gruelling hours of training.

But having returned to the talent reality programme for the 15th series, she has shrunk again.

And proud parents Sarah and Todd were in the audience to cheer her on, while looking after adorable Tripp.

The 21-year-old revealed to People that her goal lies in not gaining weight rather than just winning and taking home the trophy.

Speaking of her appearance on the ABC show, she said: 'My goal [is] not to gain any weight...

'It's hurtful for any girl when someone's criticising their weight on a national level.'

Alaska native Bristol also described the scrutiny as 'an awkward position' to be in.

But backstage on Monday night, she sounded confident speaking to Us Weekly, adding: 'I'm definitely in better shape than I was last time.

'I'm just more active and I cut all the c**p out of my diet! It's that simple...

'And my kid's a lot more rowdy, a lot more active. I'm running after him a lot! He's huge! He thinks he's a teenager already.'

She said she is learning to become immune to criticism, even using it as 'motivation', concluding: 'If I hear anything bad that's being said about me or my family, it just gives me motivation to do better.'

Last night saw the mother-of-one perform alongside the likes of Pamela Anderson and Kirstie Alley.

But she held her own with professional Mark Ballas, who said he wanted her to exude 'sex appeal'.

Shimmying in a one-shouldered white and blue dress for the cha-cha-cha, Bristol embraced the challenge, saying: 'I'm going to shake my butt but have a smile on my face.'

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba was impressed, saying: 'I vote you the most improved since the last time we saw you,' while Len Goodman agreed that Bristol was a 'lot more confident.'

Fellow panellist Bruno Tonioli said she has 'all the elements,' but needs more 'power and focus,' leaving Bristol to walk away with a respectable first episode score of 19.5.

Meanwhile, retired American football player Emmitt Smith topped the leaderboard with 24.5.

Oh gag that whole trashy family. Bristol is just like her mother, somewhat attractive and massively whiney.

wow, not sure why so many of you despise the Palins as much as you do, but I think Bristol looks great. I'm not convinced that "no one" would know who the Palins are without McCain having selected her as VP because Sarah Palin was making a name for herself and rattling liberal cages long before she was tapped for VP. And for those that are threatening to not watch Dancing with the Stars until Palin gets voted off, I"m sure you have ABC shaking in their boots. How ever will they survive without YOUR viewership? Get a life, it's supposed to be all for fun, not for anything more than that. Any haters that post anything negative are taking this far too seriously and need to relax.

Bristol looks fit and healthy, maybe she can share her secrets with the over indulgent Jessica Simpson.

Personally I think she looks great. But there are always going to be people out there who hate her because of her family which is not fair to her. Judge her on her own actions and not on whether or not you like her Mom.

I think she looks great! She looked great the first time she was on the show. You people shouldn't be so critical. Someone had to choose her to be on the show.

Bristol and Sarah have done nothing to deserve this amount of negative comments and hatred. Nothing. Bristol's only crime it seems is to have a mother who dared to have a different political views than Our Dear Leader. Its disgusting.

Give her a break. She's doing what every other single mom is doing - whatever she can to support her son. In Bristol's case, she has connections that get her DWTS. Haters, get over it. Everyone can relate to having a child say they hate them - big deal. She looks great, & grandma is watching the boy for those who fake concern.
