Increasing Asian participation in football

The FA discuss further measures to increase Asian participation in Football.

The FA has held further meetings at Wembley Stadium to progress the agenda in relation to increasing Asian participation in football.

The most recent meeting was chaired by Brendon Batson MBE (Football Consultant with The FA). It was attended by Butch Fazal (Luton SFC and FA REAG Member), Rimla Ahktar (Muslim Women Sports Foundation and FA REAG Member), Majid Lavji and Lee Owen (Asia Europe), Kuljit Rhandawa (Asian Football Network), Darren Smith (London FA), Sinem Cakir and Amit Vadera (City of London Open Spaces), Kashif Siddiqi (Kashif Siddiqi Foundation), Abdal Ahmed (Osmani Trust), Clem Leech and Ahmer Kunwar (Touch Sky Sports), Kevin Coleman and Roisin Wood (Kick it Out) and Jonathan Mills (The FA)

Seven key areas emerged from the discussions: the glass ceiling some Asian players face when attempting to make the transition from semi-professional to professional football; Identifying Asian talent early, focussing on the U7 to U9 age groups; building on and consolidating parental support; developing sustainability of projects aimed at increasing participation in the Asian community; making facilities more accessible; improving the sharing of information between stakeholders and strengthening links with clubs and Asian football networks, to increase the possibilities for the recruitment of Asian players.

Brendon Batson noted: ”It is important that collectively we take practical steps to move the key areas that arose out of the meeting forward. This is a medium to long term strategy that will need the support of all of our stakeholders to bring about a visible difference to this important area of work.”

The group, which is supported by The FA Equality Co-ordinator Jonathan Mills, will meet again in the West Midlands in September and again in the North West in early December to keep the momentum with this important agenda.
