For many, ballet has never been quite the same since Natalie Portman’s film Black Swan. But despite the fallout from that dark box-office hit, no one can dispute the radiant beauty of a ballerina at the height of her powers.

And very few dancers have surpassed the grace and poise of Darcey Bussell.

In an era of D-list celebrities, Bussell is the real deal. Already training professionally by the age of 13, she became one of Britain’s greatest ballerinas, travelling the world with  the Royal Ballet to delight audiences with her extraordinary grace,  polish and skill.

And since her retirement from ballet in 2007, she has modelled for fashion magazines, written children’s books and been chosen as one of the judges for the new series of BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Darcey Bussell (Hardie Grant Books £30 £24.99 inc p&p) is a beautiful record, in words and pictures, of her outstanding ballet career.

The gorgeous photographs capture not only Bussell’s magical dancing on stage, but also show the grittier aspects of life behind the scenery: at the barre, putting on her stage make-up and in rehearsals.

This is a book to inspire little girls everywhere.
