Modern Warfare 2 GamesCom 2009 Co-Op Preview

UPDATE 12:02 AM: Double Fine's Tim Schafer, who had his own troubles with Activision over the release of Brutal Legend, recently commented on Twitter about what's happening between Infinity Ward and Activision.

"Getting mad at Activision for this kind of thing is like getting mad at an ape for throwing feces," said Schafer. "It's just how the beast communicates."

UPDATE 11:20 PM: It turns out Activision may have showed their hand in this matter earlier today.

In an SEC filing made this morning, Activision cited a human resources investigation into "breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward."

Based on the information we currently have, at least one of those employees may have included Infinity Ward CTO Jason West. It's possible Vince Zampella is the other unmentioned employee.

"This matter is expected to involve the departure of key personnel and litigation," read the filing. "At present, the Company does not expect this matter to have a material impact on the Company."

UPDATE 11:11 PM: Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling has vaguely addressed the situation.

"I should also say, while I appreciate all the calls, tweets, messages and hearing my ringtone a lot," said Bowling on his Twitter account, "they're in vain - as I have no info."

UPDATE 10:07 PM: More developments on the situation at Infinity Ward have come to light.

A screen shot surfaced from Infinity Ward CTO Jason West's Facebook page at Kotaku with the status update "Jason West is drinking. Also, unemployed." I can confirm from a source that's friends with West that update did actually come from West's account.

West also updated his Linkedin profile to appears to reflect a change in employment.

"President/Game Director/CCO/CTO Infinity Ward
January 2001 – March 2010 (9 years 3 months)"

While this doesn't yet provide much insight into what actually happened at Infinity Ward, it confirms there are changes afoot at the Call of Duty developer. As soon as I know more, you'll know more.

UPDATE: Security Appears Unannounced At Infinity Ward, Studio Heads Missing, Staff

ORIGINAL STORY: Something's happening at Infinity Ward right now.

A source close to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 developer just informed me that a "bunch of bouncer-types" just showed up outside of the Infinity Ward offices unannounced. When approached by employees, the non-uniformed "bouncers" were unwilling to disclose why they were there.

"Everyone is on edge," said my source.

Infinity Ward studio heads Vince Zampella and Jason West reportedly met with Activision this morning and have not been seen by Infinity Ward staff members since. My source did not delve into specifics, but described the relationship between Infinity Ward and Activision lately as "tense."

The mood around the Infinity Ward offices is currently described as "freaked out" and "confused."

"We just wanna make our games," said my source.

I've contacted Activision for comment on the ongoing situation at Infinity Ward. Stay tuned.

I don't know about you guys, but there is something fishy about this. It's just not realistic. First off, this news came out when BF2 came out. Next, IW is having a map pack coming out so maybe this is a way to promote it. Third, IW has made Activision tons of cash, they wouldn't just fire them like this and say "well ha gtfo, k thx bai", that's why it's weird. And also, bouncer-type guys? This can't get anymore entertaining. It could all be a joke to promote their new DLC so that they can sustain their popularity. I can't see why Activision would fire them, if they had the least bit of a mind they wouldn't. My thought: In April their new DLC will come out and will be based on this event or something like that. In the case this isn't a joke, well Activision you can go die but for you IW, I am really sad it had to come to this, but I'll keep supporting you. Get the crew back together!

well then good for otaku loving fans who don't even play such FPS'. Like me. to see their beloved games like LittleBigPlanet, Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, and FinalFantasy once again rise to power! (I will accept any pointless flamming by appointment).

I must admit rather disturbing news for the video game community though a corner of the community I do not dwell. At first based on the look of this article, I thought it was a start of a April Fool's Joke (considering March 1st is such a good day to start an epic joke), but after cross-referencing the news with more serious news providers (sorry G4 to me is entertainment not news) I am for now convinced this is real. Though I think the lawsuit between Konami Digital Entertainment and Roxor Games back in 2005 still holds the title for epic legal conflicts in the video game industry.

Now that is over I am going back to bed.

Activision's just a corporate bully sending their thugs to scare & intimidate the good folks at Infinity Ward. I'm glad the top 2 guys there stood up for themselves. They'll both find new jobs (or start another developing studio) in no time. Activision = The Mob. Fuggetaboutit

While this seems fishy, its not a publicity stunt. I highly doubt everybody at Activision and Infinity Ward were like, "Oh yeah! We're totally go to fire your ass haha! Then we'll hire you back later!" Thats just weird, and I'm certain the guys at Infinity Ward aren't that stupid and competetive. Although, I don't know them personally, so I could be completely wrong...

In this gamers humble opinion and without knowing a lot of the facts. Activision has constantly gave the bird to IW and other developers. Infinity Ward and the people that worked there are the reason they are where they are today. Creating one of the best series in video game history. Yet they constantly degrade their work by having other sub par studios create their own terrible fps and slap the title call of duty in front.

Now the heads get fired for "breaches of contract and insubordination." I get suspicious when i hear a term like insubordination. I personally hope that the team at IW don't stand for it, but regardless gets back to taking my money $60 at a time. p.s. Would somebody please explain the story of MW2. I like being able to understand why im killing a couple armies worth of bad guys.

You know, I really don't like G4. In fact I could probably say I despise G4 with certainty. BUT, I must say, kudos to you Mr. Patrick Klepek. This is one hell of a story. Keep up the good work, maybe I'll return to your website some day.

This is so funny to watch play out. Activision and Kotick are either very smart in making a move like this or single-handedly the dumbest company out there. IS it really possible that 2 of the most successful FPS developers did something so wrong to earn an exit such as this? What's more perplexing is the bouncer-type figures that were posted outside of the studio. How is that necessary? I doubt that Jason and VInce did something so atrocious that warranted this kind behavior on Activision's behalf. I am waiting to hear the statements from Activision, Jason and Vince. I can bet that this is a esult of not wanting to do another COD:MW and/or the PAy service that has been mentioned before. Either way I wish them the best of luck and I look forward to seeing more of their work in the future.

wow. I am more agast at the comments of "I reported it first" or "Klepek is dropping the ball and not really on top of reporting." If you feel you can do a better job then do so. I will say that this article makes me just as confused as the employees as to whats going on.
