On Champions League Matchday 2, Bayern fell to a surprise 3-1 defeat against Belarus side BATE Borisov. The Central Europeans recorded their first-ever home victory in Europe's elite club competition, but it was an unwanted and avoidable loss for FCB. Deep disappointment was the chief emotion in the Munich camp afterwards. “It's simple: we failed to take the lead, to score the opening goal," Manuel Neuer said.
Reaction to BATE Borisov v Bayern:
Jupp Heynckes: “I knew before the match we were up against very good opponents. They're extremely well organised, especially in defence, and they proved that again today. But more than anything else, they fought till they dropped, especially when we applied pressure. In a game like that, you have to take the lead, but if you don’t, your opponents can counter-attack from a defensive platform. They did that very well. But our opponents’ best player was their goalkeeper, and from that you can see we applied pressure the whole time. But at the end of the day, you have to applaud our opponents for winning.“
Manuel Neuer: “It's simple: we failed to take the lead, to score the opening goal. We had some good chances at the start, and if we'd gone in front it would have been a totally different match. The Borisov lads shut up shop at the back, defended as well as they could, and then played on the break. That made it difficult for us. Obviously, losing here 3-1 against Borisov is a blow. But we have to stay in the hunt and win both matches against Lille. Once we have nine points the situation will look a lot better.“
Aleksandr Hleb (BATE Borisov): “It was a very difficult game for us, but we battled right to the end and we're delighted now. Of course it's a sensational result, but we believed we could do it before the match. We're taking each game as it comes, and now we face Valencia. But we'll go there trying to take all three points.“
