          It's strained not because of a magic reveal but because Arthur is now focusing on Saintly, perfect Gwen and won't listen to Merlin (as usual) when Merlin tries to warn him about Mordred. Arthur never learns from his mistakes, he mistreats a...
          nd takes advantage of Merlin all the time, won't recognize or elevate him, won't even get him new clothes. It reflects very very badly on Arthur as a king. Merlin is the real power behind the throne and Arthur would be nothing without him, not to mention dead 20 times over. No wonder their relationship is "strained". I don't know why Merlin stays with him. Their relationship (Arthur * Merlin) should what the show emphasizes most because it's most fans favorite aspect and I wish the showrunners could see that and weren't so short sighted.
