"How to Play" Tutorial

Before you set out, choose the first option on the opening menu, "How to Play". This drops you into a room where various helpful NPCs wander. Speak to them, and they'll give you hints and instructions relevant to your experience. Here's a sampling of them, pulled verbatim from The After Years:

Band Attacks
"Band" moves are combo attacks that characters with ties to one another can pull off together. It's not just limited to two people, either. Some Bands involve three, four, even five party members at once. You can search for new Bands by selecting "Band" during battle, then "Search for Bands." Select the party members and commands to Band with, then press A to "Execute" the Band. You need to choose the right characters and commands, though, or else the Band will fail entirely.
Forming Your Party
Use the "Party" and "Formation" menu commands to set up your front and back rows in battle. Party members with low defense will take less damage from enemy physical attacks if they're in the rear. Taking up the rear also means they'll take a hit on physical attack power and accuracy with most weapons.
Pausing During Battles
You must think fast in battle! The ability to make snap decisions often decides the fate of the fight. If you don't have what it takes, choose "Settings" from the menu and set the battle mode to "Wait." That'll freeze time while you're busy picking through your magic and items!
Changing Equipment in Combat
Select "Items" in battle, then press up on the Control Pad to display items equipped in your hands. Select an equipped item, then press down on the Control Pad and choose another item. You can swap out that character's equipment, just like that!
Running From Battle
If the battle isn't going your way, sometimes you just gotta flee to fight another day! Hold down B when you need to escape from the fight. You can't run from every enemy, though, so watch yourself out there!

Additional Combat Tips
Protecting Your Party
If you've read through the entire "Basics" section, you're already familiar with Party Formation. In addition to using that, you should utilize status boosting spells, such as Protect. However, regular battles pass quickly, and some of the aforementioned magics are single target. Thus, you should always deliberate who to cast such spells upon. Who needs the buff the most? Make sure they get it first!
Revitalizing on a Budget
If you're an RPG veteran, you already understand the pricelessness of free sleeping arrangements. There are times when taking an extra long trip to an out-of-the-way town is worth the dough you save. As there are some magical Healing Pots in FFIV:TAY, you'll be gifted with this thrifty option rather early on, which gives you more money to spend on items and occasional inn stops. If you think that defeats the purpose, note that fallen party members will be resurrected whenever you sleep at an inn. If you can't cast Raise, and aren't anywhere close to a Healing Pot, this is significantly cheaper than using a Phoenix Down on everyone! Unfortunately, Tents don't Raise, so you should still carry PDs for those grueling.
Conserving Your Magic
Truthfully, this goes hand-in-hand with the "Protecting Your Party" advice. Especially if you're thrifty, it won't be long before you've plenty of gil to spend, and—since you won't need to constantly purchase new armor and weaponry—you should use it to stock up on perishables. Using Potions, Hi-Potions, Antidotes, and similar concoctions help save your mages' MP. This is especially useful for characters like Ceodore, since you'll want to use his Band Attacks, and those require Magic Points. On top of that, there will be times when your party is without a healer. Don't be a tightwad. Buy lots of Potions, or you'll regret it!
Conquering the Undead
Fairly early on, you will be pitted against various undead creatures. These include zombies and skeletons, among a handful of others. Although regular physical attacks will damage them, you can also use curative White Magic and Fire-based spells on the vermin.
Dealing with Jellies
Whenever you're up against a gelatinous foe, your melee will be rendered useless. The enemy's forgiving exterior rejects physical attacks, so your Black Mages will become the stars of these shows. In particular, spells like Thundara will cook jellies quickly.
Dividing Your Accomplishments
As you progress through Final Fantasy IV: The After Years' various scenarios, you should have one save slot dedicated to reach completed chapter. This will prove impor
