FEATURED VOXPOP Tyrranis Well, my graphics card died a month or so ago. It wasn't unexpected, nor was it entirely tragic. After all, it was like 6 years since I bought the thing. And so, a new card was needed. Me and the family decided that it was a good time to upgrade to a 2 GB, to replace the old...

Cliff Bleszinski Leaves Epic Games

Posted on Wednesday, October 3 @ 16:20:44 Eastern by

When you create a mega-franchise that has literally defined an entire console generation, where do you go? What does the next-generation of Cliff Bleszinski have that the last-gen didn't?

Epic Games announced the departure today in a blog post saying that Beszinski was on his way to the "next stage of his career." After 20 years at Epic, the next stage is probably the last stage before retirement. With the Unreal franchise and engine under his belt, Cliffy B will undoubtedly continue to be a hot commodity in the industry. Epic CEO and founder Tim Sweeney wrote in the same blog post:

In 20 wonderful years with Epic, Cliff Bleszinski has grown into a true design luminary, and his contributions to the "Unreal" and "Gears" series have helped shape the game industry into what it is today. Cliff leaves Epic with our gratitude for his many contributions, and our wishes for continued success in the next chapter of his life!

Bleszinski added to the same blog post:

I've been doing this since I was a teenager, and outside of my sabbatical last year, I have been going non-stop. I literally grew up in this business, as Mike likes to say. And now that I'm grown up, it's time for a much needed break.

I will miss the projects, the playtests, the debates, and most importantly, the people. Epic only hires the best of the best, and it has been a joy working with each and every one of you on a daily basis, whether you were hired weeks ago or decades ago. I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with a variety of disciplines, from code to art to marketing and PR – it's been one big, rewarding learning experience. I'm confident that each project that is being built, whether at Epic, Chair, PCF, or Impossible will be top notch and will please gamers and critics alike.

Gears of War: Judgement, the next game from Epic, is slated for release in March with Fortnite still ahead as well.

Will he go the Peter Molyneux route and form his own studio or is he headed somewhere else?

What would Naughty Dog be like with Cliffy B? Wowzas! Maybe he'll go back to gaming roots and just make **** in his basement. Wouldn't that be somethin'?

Almost everything ive played of his on the pc from the last 5 years hasn't left me with love or affection for him. Hope this inspires him to make a grand slam home run and releases it on the pc as well.

Except for UT of course but I don't think the whole UT series really road on his input solely alone.

Not his input alone but the primary vision, and that UT style is unmistakably Cliff. The original unreal tournament is to this day one of the best games I've ever played, and for that alone Cliff has my thanks.

You guys should see all the hate comments on GameSpot saying good riddens. Then again, leave it to GameSpot's 60% underage demographic where 14 year olds judge hard working men who have never worked a day in their life themselves. I refuse to comment on that site because even if you are positive, some little 12 year old (pretending to be an adult) comes along and ruins it somehow. Not sure why GameSpot has so many children and not GameRevolution.

We definitely have more mature content than Gamespot.... if mature means lots more cursing and references to much older movies, music, etc. I think Gamespot's (and IGN's) visibility in the market place help to attract the younger demographic. Discerning gamers choose GameRevolution.

Haha, I wouldn't think NecroWolf when I think about the immaturity level at GR, but if you want to volunteer yourself to save Ugh or Edd from embarassment, fine. :D

Back at Epic? I don't think they would have made so much fuss out of his departure if that were true. Where does Cliffy B go on vacation? Chainsaw World in Florida?
