I imagine Lorenzo has been furiously playing the Thief series after reading the comments to find out what everyone's on about. Then again, it's not on a console...

I think it's a great list, despite what the whiners say. You don't like his OPINION on the best stealth games? Go make your OWN list on your OWN blog for no one to read. I didn't know you guys rated Mark of the Ninja so highly, you have definitely swayed me to pick it up. Sly 2 is actually a stealth/heist game compared to Sly 1, which was a platformer with easy combat. I agree with most of the games, I haven't played Sniper Elite V2, I would switch out MGS3 for MGS2 though, and I would have put Thief in place of Sniper Elite, but then again, I haven't played it. Dishonored deserves it's spot, since I just finished it and the stealth is unlike any other game which is great. Most of these games are hybrids, where you CAN do stealth but you don't necessarily HAVE to. Honestly, pure stealth games which make you go undetected or you fail aren't fun to me.

What about the Tenchu sage's? I Think that should have been on the top 10.

I think we should get a Kickstarter campaign started to get Lorenzo banned from ever speaking his thoughts on videogames ever again. And, while we're at it, we should completely replace the entire editorial team for allowing this travesty to come to light. It's been a long time since an editorial piece actually made me feel sick like this. Everyone here knows what's missing, I don't even need to say it. This is like: -Most influential shooters - not listing any id games -Best city-building games - not listing Sim City -Richest people in the world - not listing any billionaires -Funniest, wittiest, sexiest commentators on GR - not listing yonderTheGreat -Top four suits in a deck of cards - not mentioning spades You get the idea. This is pathetic. Beyond pathetic. What the heck is this, kotaku?

For a second there I thought you were actually serious. Then i got to this: "-Funniest, wittiest, sexiest commentators on GR - not listing yonderTheGreat" And then I realized that this post is actually not meant to be taken seriously XD So bravo for that sir!

Thief II is the best in the Thief franchise, love me some amazing non-linear level designs, but 1 and 3 are also good. MGS2 is the best in the MGS franchise, stealth gameplay wise. The others are incredibly inferior when it comes to ai and gameplay mechanics. Splinter-Cell 1-4 are all good and have their own merits. Not the next-gen/pc version of the fourth game but the original Xbox version of Double Agent which is a completely different beast in every aspect compared to it's next-gen versions, it's a lot of like Chaos Theory. Conviction was just a disgrace cover-based tps with 'win' buttons mapped to every part of the controller, terrible level designs and ai, and a complete joke of a binary stealth system.

I just read your list, it was painful. I thought you guys were gamers, not casuals who suck and don't understand deep and rewarding game designs. You guys have lost all my respects. Besides Hitman Blood Money, Mark of the Ninja, and possibly Deus Ex the rest of the games are terrible at stealth. Deus Ex HR is sub-part at best, you should've included the first one instead. It had much better level design and an actual light/dark system for hiding in the shadows. The rest of the games are complete jokes and barely count as good stealth games compared to so many other games out there. You're first thought should be is this game still completely beatable without a bit of stealth involved? If the answer is yes then immediately reconsider it. TL;DR this list sucks GamesRadar.

the Thief series MUST be on this list!!! Garett awesomely gets past guards, sentries, archers, civilians, strange traps, zombies, weird monsters, undead hammerites, poisonous wildlife and the likes for breakfast! and all for the sake of stealing valuable treasure.

I agree. Opinion or not, you do not make a list of best stealth games and not include a Thief game. The game has the best AI out of any stealth game. It has a n elaborate shadow system allowing for careful cover management. It has massive sprawling non linear levels where how you get by really was up to you. It wasn't just a buzz kind of phrase which gets thrown around at random today. You also had various tools to gets rid of light or muffle sound. I don't think there has been any stealth game that even approached the standard of excellence if Thief 2 since.

It's a pity I've played so few on there. MGS3 definitely deserves it's spot as opposed to the others, and Hitman is brilliant too, but I have to disagree with Deus Ex. I was hugely put off by the fact that, if you wanted to try and play stealthily, but also to use the non-lethal variants on weapons, you were basically f*cked. I only played through the first few levels, but trying to get through without killing anyone or being killed myself was impossible, and soon put me right off the rest of the game anyway.

I like the majority of this list... but to choose SC: Conviction out of all the SC series is pure blasphemy. It's easily the LEAST stealth-based of the franchise. That award should've went to Chaos Theory, easily. Hell, there were achievements in the game that revolves around you completing an entire mission without being detected FFS. Conviction was far more action intensive and IMO, by far the worst of the series. And a stealth game list without any of the Thief series makes me very, very sad... D=
  • comaqi - October 11, 2012 10:20 a.m.

If you're going to put a Splinter Cell game in the list make it chaos theory! That game is fantastic! Neither Conviction or AC2 are stealth game. And I really enjoyed both of those, but they're action, not stealth. Personally, I would swap Conviction with Chaos theory, and AC2 with Thief 2. But other than that I think this is a really good list. Nice job Lorenzo!
  • haxxoromg - October 11, 2012 5:19 p.m.

i get why some fans are pissed about conviction making it and chaos theory not, but honestly i had way more fun with conviction. i know its not quite as tactical or stealthy, but few other games make you feel as badass. i loved the fact that with careful planning you could jump into a room and clear it in sometimes less than 5 seconds
  • metalgatesolid - October 11, 2012 9:59 a.m.

Hitman is amazing. I strive for Silent Assassin on every level. Loved Hitman 2, Blood Money was great.
  • leonel19888 - October 11, 2012 9:03 a.m.

i dont get how asscreed got in here......just because he kills people and ten runs away and sit in a bench doesnt make it a stealth game and splinter cell conviction? well i agree that CT was stealh oriented but can also play conviction that way is your choice going gunz blazin or play it as a stealth game but for god sake take out asscreed out of here its repetitive as hell and all it has is a "semi cool character" who stands out of the crow for his "cool costume" but not for the AI snd the fact that every enemy in the game suddenly develop parkour abilities like the character so still dont get what makes him apart of the of the mongolic AI...Ohh he is sitting in a bench!..WHO?..the ass? it cant be he looks just like the other jst look at him !!!! in the defense of the game only thing i enjoyed multiplayer..
  • Civfanatic - October 11, 2012 7:40 a.m.

  • bamit11 - October 11, 2012 7:40 a.m.

Batman is good, but MGS3 is way better.
  • bedelicious - October 11, 2012 7 a.m.

  • shawksta - October 11, 2012 6:43 a.m.

Great list, ah Good Ol Sly, F*cking Love that series, I cant believe I haven't played the second yet, otherwise the 3rd was fantastic. I expected Sly to be higher though.
