hall072910.jpgFormer Browns linebacker Alex Hall, shown here rushing Giants quarterback Eli Manning in 2008, has been claimed by the Giants. He'll play defensive end in their 4-3 scheme.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said Wednesday the team determined Alex Hall is better suited to play linebacker in a 3-4 than defensive end in a 4-3.

Clearly, the Giants feel differently.

The Giants claimed Hall off waivers from Philly Thursday afternoon. The former 2008 seventh-round pick of the Browns was traded from Cleveland to Philly in April as part of the Sheldon Brown deal. The Eagles obviously didn't like what they saw from Hall in their defensive scheme this spring and therefore waived him before veterans reported to camp in Lehigh.

"I think Alex Hall will be a very good outside linebacker in a 3-4 front," Eagles coach Andy Reid said, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. "We worked him as a linebacker, and also worked him as a defensive end. After the evaluation, we just felt like his best thing would probably be a 3-4, and I think Alex can definitely play in this league and be very successful, he's just got to get into the right situation."

The Giants say the 6-2, 250-pound Hall will be a defensive end - at least for now. They'll likely try to find a way to use him in a pass-rushing role after he recorded three sacks with Cleveland in 2008, including a sack of Eli Manning in a Browns blowout victory.

The other move the Giants made to gain a roster spot was one that was expected. They waived rookie safety Chad Jones, who's currently recovering from a serious car accident. The move was done with the intention of placing Jones on the reserve/non-football injury list if he clears waivers.

Jones will be officially done for the season once he lands on the reserve/NFI list. Also, the Giants will be under no obligation to pay him anything, though they will probably take care of him in some form or fashion.

9:24 p.m. UPDATE I want to clarify the above statement. If Jones lands on NFI, he Giants are under no obligation to pay him his 2010 BASE SALARY ($320,000). His signing bonus of $850,000 is his to keep.
