My New Role as CTO of Dell’s Enterprise Solutions Group
10 Oct 2012
Dell is undergoing a massive shift in its business and strategy. Over the past four years, the company has been busy building significant new businesses to augment its traditional and well-known strength in client devices. Examples of this include a new Software division , a Services division, and the most visible to date – the Enterprise Solutions Group (ESG). ESG comprises Dell’s Server, Storage and Networking domains and has been one of the most active groups in all of the technology industry in terms of expanding its capabilities and addressable markets. It’s now positioned to address current and future customer concerns as it never had in the past. As I have had a chance to learn in my first 10 weeks on the job, Dell ESG has done a remarkable job of predicting where the puck is going to, and getting there first. We saw the importance of rack efficient, hyperscale servers for the cloud provider market and made an early investment in DCS. Today, we have 53% market share. We saw the value of iSCSI storage, made an

What do following scenarios have in common? A 911-like emergency system in a major European city that has to store all calls A digital forensics company that requires transfer of large volumes of graphically intense data A university research center that works on ocean mapping A hospital where physicians need immediate access to critical patient information, such as high resolution digital images from the Archival Communication Systems (PACS). All these need to move data at a...

Last month I introduced two SAP HANA customer case studies highlighting how Dell is solving complex big data issues for global customers. To further provide you with more information on Dell’s solutions for SAP HANA I recently sat down with John Ellis, SAP Enterprise Technologist at Dell to explore the topic a bit further. John mentions that he is a member of TechAmerica on behalf of Dell working on Big Data solutions. A quick search of “Big Data” on the site will return 72...

Do sales and marketing get along in your organization? Or do comments in the office sound more like this: Sales : “What does marketing do? I don’t have enough leads, and the ones I have are no good!” Marketing : “Sales calls our leads and asks them immediately if they want to buy something. They don’t take the time to understand the customer needs in order to sell them the right solution.” How would your business change if marketing and sales teams could...

Knock down the barriers to desktop virtualization

Virtual desktop infrastructure returns IT control to your business. VDI also makes it easier to manage and protect user data and applications, because those resources live on servers in a datacenter, not on your employee’s PC or device. Mobile and remote workers are free to go anywhere and still get access to their virtual desktops, but those resources never leave the secure datacenter. Some companies have seen a five- to 10-percent boost in productivity as a result of the convenience desktop...

In last week’s blog post , we went through the deployment cycle for new infrastructure, which can take around 134-174 days and 450+ working hours; plus, there are risks and errors that can occur during each step. Dell’s solution – vStart – offers a more rapid, low-risk approach for our customers needing to deploy infrastructure quickly for virtualization and private clouds. Over the past few years, we’ve been able to help customers see faster results – both...

The TechAmerica Foundation is releasing its Big Data Report today. The goal of the report is straightforward yet visionary, as the title reflects – “A practical guide to transforming the business of government.” The report achieves three important results: 1) it resolves common misconceptions about the definition of Big Data; 2) it outlines how Big Data can be used to address key issues facing government agencies; and 3) it also provides a common framework for policy discussions...

Powering the Possible in Smart Grid

A neighbor’s rooftop solar panel can feed electricity back to the grid when it’s capturing more energy than its owner needs, meaning a home becomes an energy generator in addition to an energy consumer. An electric vehicle owner charges her car overnight during what used to be considered non-peak hours — but these hours could easily become energy intensive if more drivers purchase plug-in vehicles and charge at the same time. Both are technologies with potential to reduce carbon...

The majority of payers and providers continue to see clinician adoption, alignment and leadership as the top three barriers to building a successful Accountable Care Organization (ACO) . Adding to these barriers is a history in which payers and providers have not always viewed each other as equal partners in the same system. In an age where market and regulatory forces are demanding more efficient care through an integrated model of finance and care delivery, it is clear that the barriers to collaboration...
