PlayStation Blogcast 041: Blood, Sweat and Code — A PAX Postmortem

I can say with considerable confidence that today’s episode is our biggest and best yet, weighing in at a groan-inducing (but quality-packed!) two hours and 10 minutes. Our time at PAX Prime last week yielded sweet fruit in the form of five new game developer interviews, and each one is a treat. First, indie developer Matt Gilgenbach discusses how his new PSN-exclusive “reverse shooter” Retro/Grade changed his life; from there, we shift to Snapshot, the charming PS3 and PS Vita platform puzzler that enables players to manipulate their environment through photographs. Then Drinkbox Studios’ Chris Harvey and Graham Smith discuss their plans for cross-controller support on their upcoming PS3 and PS Vita adventure Guacamelee, while Hitman: Absolution Game Director Tore Blystad shares the secrets of the game’s newly announced Contracts multiplayer mode.

Finally, we launch into a sprawling discussion on The Walking Dead – Episode 3 with a literal mob of Telltale game designers: Jake Rodkin, Sean Vanaman, Harrison Pink, and Eric Parsons describe the challenges of episodic game creation, the most-loved characters in the game, and how they’ve managed to stay true to Robert Kirkman’s relentlessly grim vision. It’s a fascinating listen and one of my favorite interview segments of the year.

We’ve also got a special guest in the studio: Brad Douglas, who comes to us by way of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. In addition to be being a big gamer, Brad explains Japanese gaming culture and how he ended up in the role of publisher relations in this week’s Origin Story segment. Of course, today’s show features the usual niceties, from next week’s PlayStation Store game lineup to an avalanche of Player Queries™ and tips to a vexing new Mystery Theme. There’s even a farm-fresh new PSN Gem of the Week! Listen in and let us know what you think.

Stuff We Talked About

The Walking Dead – Episode 3
Hitman: Absolution
Snapshot
Retro/Grade
Guacamelee
Double Dragon Neon

Holy Blogcast Batman! This was a long one.

You guys need to talk about Mercia: Fractured Realms, the free to play MMO RPG on PS Home sometime. It is AMAZING.

also, quick reference to last week, I tried to get cinnamontography trending on twitter, but sadly, no bite :(

There were only like 3 tweets with mine being the first. lol.

now, on a serious note, The Walking Dead Game is amazing, and what an easy plat! You get all the trophies just for playing the game, so the real challenge is just waiting for new episodes.

I kept it pretty clear of spoilers — I actually hadn’t played Episode 3 when we recorded this and stayed mostly spoiler free.

All I want to hear is MGS Portable Ops support is finally on Vita in NTSC territories! Bring me some good news! I feel like no one is listening to us asking for this support. It’s been at least 6 months since I started asking and cannot get a response.

Is there anything us fans can do to help get it working on Vita?

No word on if/when that’ll be released publicly, but we’ll keep you updated. Guacamelee has excellent support though and is definitely including it.

Scott Pilgrim free por Plus is pretty damn cool, best Beat Em Up ever, love the soundtrack too, but how come there’s never free themes for Plus anymore?

MGS Portable Ops NEEDS to be on the Vita, c’mon… Europe’s got it, so it’s not a technical problem with the game… Please Sony/Konami, make it happen! :(

We’ll pass this along, thanks. The trend has been for more games to come out, not less, so I’m optimistic about it long-term (though am not involved with that process).

Hey podcast crew! I got some Vita related questions for you guys:

1) Why aren’t more HD collections being pushed to the PlayStation Vita?

2) Why can I still not see my Vita friends (that are online, playing Vita) and Vita related trophies on my PlayStation 3?? (This is huge, still not fixed after 6 months).

3) Why can’t remote play be standard for all games, I understand that PSP had limited buttons which was best for devs to configure, but why can’t these games just be pushed to remote play by Sony and have the back touchpad have the defaults as L2 and R2?

You don’t have to answer all of them, but please answer all you can!

PS – Also, where is the PlayStation App for iOS and Android that was supposed to release at the beginning of the year?

The PlayStation app that was mentioned did not progress as expected so it’s been on hold, no word on it coming out in the foreseeable future. We’ll keep you updated if that changes.

you should talk more about playstation plus and real issues. like when you give away games that people already own ??? i would really like your opinions on that another wasted month ? sony really needs to do something about that ,to be fair why would a noob get the games free and dedicated gamers barely nothing with plus

@14 There is absolutely nothing wrong with Playstation Plus. It’s awesome. Just because you bought a game before Plus released it for free doesn’t negate the value of Plus. It is a wonderful service that Sony is really putting a lot of effort into. Remember, most of these titles are not produced by Sony, so other developers are willingly allowing their titles to be free for Sony’s service. Plus is fantastic, and I am a very, very proud member.

But speaking of Plus, I’m just curious as to when this fantastic service is coming to Vita? I’ve actually come to a complete halt on Vita store purchases, because I’m waiting for what Plus is going to bring to the table on my Vita. I thought it was announced that Plus was going to start beginning of September for Vita. Did I hear wrong?

I have been listening to this podcast for a while now and i must say its one of the only ones that i care to listen to. its a great podcast. Though I must disagree about Journey, I did not really like the game and could not get into it. Blogcast crew has talk about Sound Shapes and Pinball Arcade and those are great games. Two of my most played games actually. I do have a user question. What is an easy way to find game betas? because i’m always looking and I can never find any.
