Analyst: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock Sales Disappoint in September
Cowen & Company's Doug Creutz pegs Warriors of Rock's first-month sales at just 86,000 units.
Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock was notably absent from last night's NPD sales chart for the month of September. That's already a fairly alarming sign for Neversoft's latest shred-fest (and for the rhythm genre in general), but in case you were wondering exactly how rough things are getting for Guitar Hero, just take a look at this number: 86,000.
That, according to Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz (via CVG), is the total number of copies Warriors of Rock sold in its debut month. For a little context, Guitar Hero 5's first-month NPD sales reached 210,000 on the Xbox 360 alone, while Guitar Hero: World Tour moved more than 500,000 units in just a week.
To be fair, Warriors of Rock didn't even hit retail until the very end of September. Still, that's a pretty sharp decline from the days when Guitar Hero III sold 1.4 million copies in less than a week.

The people who continue to waste money on these "track packs" are the same drones that must watch Survivor and keep it going into it's 17th season.

About time

I'm so sick and tired of this games. Every gathering has to have this music game on. Everyone looks braindead looking at the stupid screen waiting for their turn. I just want this trend to be over and move on!

Who could have seen this coming? /sarcasm

Stupid story + bad set list + no additions from the last game = no music game sales.
I'm excited for Rock Band 3, but I have the feeling it will not have great sales either. I have almost every 360 Guitar Hero at this point, and I refused to buy GH:WoR. Maybe when it's $15.
If Guitar Hero officially, really, dead this time?

It's just getting sad.

I used to love these games, but I can only rebuy the same thing so many times. I probably would still find interest if there was some time put into each game. They released way too many way too fast, and I'm burnt out on the franchise. Rock band has some promise of keeping interested. R.I.P.

Activision is the king of killing good franchises.

I have fond memories of Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, Spider-Man, and Call of Duty games but these days I don't bother with any of them.
I'll give Warriors of Rock this, at least its not letting you make a mockery of good deceased musicians by puppeteering their avatars through karaoke of music that they would despise. I'll unfortuantely never get the image of Kurt Cobain and Johnny Cash singing Public Enemy and Bon Jovi out of my brain.

It was a stupid idea anyway

Quest mode on a guitar hero game? QUEST MODE? What the hell does quest mode have anything to do with a rhythm based guitar game?

At least seemingly. The next Rock Band looks interesting, but all these music games are really wearing me thin.

Rhythm game developers

Just need to take a couple of years off, come up with some new tech or ways of playing, and let people get refreshed on the franchises. People are just getting worn out on these games, or are satisfied with the version/instruments they have. Rock Band has 2000+ songs available now. That's a lot of content to play through if you wanted, without ever having to buy a new game.

Oh, man...

...you mean they endlessley rehashed the game over and over, packaged it with a Soundgarden album full of songs most people would already own (plus one new one, easily downloaded off iTunes for, like, a buck), and it didn't sell well?! Man, I never would have guessed!
On a serious note, though, it's nice to see gamers putting their money where there mouths are (or rather, not putting it there) when it comes to these franchises that get too many entries with too little innovation, and I'm glad Activision isn't getting rewarded for annual releases for once. As much as I love Soundgarden (greatest band of all time in my mind), it's hard to convince myself to buy their new album when it's just a compilation, let alone the mediocre rhythm game it comes with. Besides, Rock Band already has some of Soundgarden's best.

What did they expect?

Guitar Hero sequels suck... plain and simple!

I only bought 2 Guitar Hero games at full price near it's launch! Guitar Hero: World Tour because I needed a 2nd guitar, and Guitar Hero: Metallica because Metallica is my most favorite band of alltime and all the songs kick ass!
Every single other Guitar Hero game I bought used! Just because I refuse to pay $70 or more for a guitar game with only a HANDFUL OF GOOD SONGS!!!!
Seriously, I never played a Guitar Hero's story mode, because they are boring! Being forced to play through songs I hate is not fun at all!!! Which is why I buy these games used for $10 to $20, and then I replay the 3 to 6 good songs that I like over and over with friends.
Looking at Warriors of Rock, there are exactly 8 songs that I like. Pretty much all the metal bands, like Anthrax, Dethklok, Megadeth, Metallica and Pantera! The rest of the whole game are shit I never heard of, or hate because it's too "slow". Will I buy Warriors of Rock? HELL YES...... the day I see a used $20 copy at EBgames, Ebay or find someone on Craigslist!
Seriously Activision... stop releasing stand-alone Guitar Hero games and sell individual songs or sell music genre packs like what Rock Band does! Not everyone may like Metal, but I do! I will not pay $70 for a music game that lacks metal! But then again, some people hate metal, and prefer all that pop rock crap like Foo Fighters or Soundgarden... release a $70 package with songs only of that genre! Keep my metal away from that crap music!

Not Surprising

I'm not at all surprised. After buying Rock Band 2, and downloading probably 80 plus songs over Xbox live(where I can purchase the songs I actually want to play), I just haven't had any interest in the Guitar Hero franchise. And the fact they are releasing 2 or 3 a year doesn't help. I am excited about Rock Band 3 however, how my Rock Band 2 DLC can (will) be imported, and how it can teach me how to play the real guitar.
Other than that I agree with Merodach, they are wanting to do this with COD and Halo, and I'm not on the band wagon for COD Black Ops.

And to make up for it next year.

they should end this franchise already........no body wants to buy the GH series anymore.......its gotten very dull, plain,dry....and very boring....its not fun anymore...unlike the first 3 games.....they were fun actually......
