Algeria 1990 - Desert War One

The recent clashes between Algeria and Egypt who met in a World Cup qualifier are nothing new. In a similar confrontation, 20 years ago, Egypt qualified for the World Cup in Italy after incidents off and on the pitch.

Months later Egypt were expected to travel to Algiers for the Nations Cup. With tensions still high, there were speculations whether the Pharaohs would pull out.

But after receiving adequate security assurances, Egypt sent a B team with a mixture of youth and reserving key players for the World Cup.

The move was fuelled by the fact that Egypt was drawn in the same group as host Algeria. The Egyptian side lost all three group games, conceding six goals.

In front of 100,000 fans, Algeria won their first Nations Cup title after beating Nigeria 1-0 in the final.

The other shock of the tournament was the early elimination of Cameroon who were World Cup bound. The defending Nations Cup champions were beaten by Zambia and Senegal in their group. navigation
