TRIBUNE BROADCASTING JOINS WITH WARNER BROS. TO LAUNCH FIFTH TELEVISION NETWORK

    CHICAGO, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Tribune Broadcasting Company will join with Warner Bros. to launch a new prime-time TV network in the fall of 1994, James C. Dowdle, president and CEO of Tribune Broadcasting, announced today.
    Tribune Television stations in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Denver and New Orleans will become affiliates of the WB Network, which
initially is expected to cover 85 percent of U.S. households.   Plans call for a five-year program rollout, beginning with two prime time nights of two hours each.  WB's prime time schedule will consist of broad-appeal, original entertainment programs with emphasis on 18- to 49-year-olds.  In subsequent years, WB will provide morning and afternoon children's programming as well as an early evening family hour.
    "Warner Bros.' proven prime time programming expertise, the strength of Tribune's station group, and Jamie Kellner's successful track record in launching the Fox network will make the fifth network a reality," Dowdle said.  Kellner will serve as WB's managing general partner.

    Tribune stations will retain their strong commitments in local markets, including local prime time news, public affairs and children's programming, Dennis J. FitzSimons, president of Tribune Television, said.
    Participation in WB by WGN-TV in Chicago will be decided in the near future.  WGN's position as "Chicago's Very Own" and America's No. 1 local sports station would not be affected.  Tribune Television's other stations with sports commitments will continue to broadcast those schedules.

"Joining with WB also should significantly improve our already strong ratings and our advertising revenues."
    The five-year WB rollout is expected to begin with programming from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. eastern time (7 p.m. to 9 p.m. central) on two prime time nights, adding two nights of prime time, five hours of daytime Monday-Friday and four hours on Saturday morning in the second year.  A fifth prime time night and 1-1/2 hours weekdays would be added the third year, followed by another prime time hour and a weekday afternoon hour in year four.  The seventh prime time night is planned for the fifth year.
