Court tosses Fla. voter registration rule

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- A federal judge Wednesday ruled against Florida in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of state restrictions on third-party voter registration.

U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle said he will grant a request to remove the restrictions permanently, plaintiffs in the case said in a release issued by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law.

100-year-old driver injures 11 people

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- A 100-year-old driver told police his brakes failed before he struck 11 people, including nine children, Wednesday at a Los Angeles school.

Four boys were hurt seriously enough to be transported to a hospital, KTLA-TV reported.

Preston Carter, who said he will be 101 next month, said he was backing out of a supermarket parking lot when the brakes gave way, police said. But some witnesses said they believed Carter hit the gas because he was frustrated children were in his way.

LANDOVER, Md., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Roy Helu scored twice and ran for 90 yards Wednesday in leading Washington to a 30-3 exhibition blasting of Tampa Bay.

Evan Royster added 44 yards and a score on 10 carries and Billy Cundiff, signed by Washington on Tuesday, made two field goals in the opening period.

Kirk Cousins completed 15-of-27 passes for 222 yards for the Redskins, who are scheduled to open the regular season on Sept. 9 in New Orleans.

Ancient figurines found outside Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Israeli archaeologists unearthed two figurines estimated to be more than 9,000 years old, dating back to the New Stone Age in excavations outside Jerusalem.

The figurines were found near a large round building with a fieldstone foundation and mud-brick walls in Tel Motza, the Israel Antiquities Authority said.

Hemsley's body still at funeral home

EL PASO, Texas, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- The body of TV icon Sherman Hemsley remains stored in an El Paso, Texas, funeral home freezer five weeks after his death from lung cancer.


The El Paso Times said funeral plans for the 74-year-old star of The Jeffersons and Amen have been delayed while his will is contested.

Amends made for foreclosure fraud

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Five U.S. banks have made a substantial start to paying homeowners their portion of a $26 billion court settlement, an independent report said.

The settlement with state and federal authorities to which Ally Financial, Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo agreed is meant to provide about $20 billion in mortgage relief to homeowners to make up for a foreclosure fraud scandal that surfaced in 2010.
