She was due to arrive in golden splendour as Cleopatra at her extravagant annual Halloween bash in New York City.

But Heidi Klum is cancelling the party after Superstorm Sandy struck the east coast of the U.S. last night.

The supermodel tweeted the bad news this morning, writing: 'Hope you and your loved ones are are safe after the storm. Cancelling my Halloween party...postponing to a haunted Christmas.'

Underneath, she posted a picture of herself dressed in a black padded coat and beanie hat, on what appeared to be a rain-lashed New York Street.

The 39-year-old star had been due to host the party at Finale nightclub on Halloween night, and had even tweeted a preview of her Queen of the Nile costume for her Twitter followers.

The model showed off her slim figure in the clinging golden gown, complete with a very large and detailed sparkling golden head piece.

Heidi posted a video on her website that gave a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the making of her costume, in which she tells designer Martin Izquierdo she wants the outfit to be: 'Big. Bold. Glittery.'

And despite the fact that the outfit looks rather heavy, the model assured the designer that she would still be able to 'dance the night away'.

In an accompanying blog post, she discussed the long process behind making the sizzling and unique costumes for the annual bash that she has been hosting for 13 years.

'As you'll see in the video, the making of my costume is quite an elaborate process,' she wrote.

'It takes months of planning and a team of expert designers to put it all together. Costume designer Martin Izquierdo has been creating my costumes for me for years. He's amazing! I can't wait for Halloween!'

Heidi had been planning to attend the bash solo for the first time, after splitting with husband Seal earlier this year.

The couple became famous for their array of his and hers outfits, and have dressed up as ravens, monkeys and the serpent and the apple from the Garden of Eden.

Some of Heidi's more memorable costumes from the party have included last year's dead body outfit and the Hundu goddess Kali back in 2008.

Haunted Christmas? That's someone who celebrates Christmas for cultural, not religious reasons. Can't imagine combining the two. Am I the only one who finds it distasteful?
