We may disagree among ourselves about matters of values, opinion, and policy, but we and our elected representatives must not misuse, hide, or misrepresent science and fact in service of our political wars.
I watched from my window as Hurricane Sandy stormed through America's northeast. Although I had declined several invitations to weather the storm with friends, I quickly realized I wasn't alone. It became hard to ignore the elephant in my room with me -- Climate Change.
While Mitt Romney has flip-flopped on climate and energy issues, he has surrounded himself with people tied to the climate denial industry.
Today, we are facing our own public health emergency that is planetary in scope. The only option now is to sideline the Senator Inhofes and the George Wills of this world and mobilize the not-insane people and their governments to bring us back from the brink.
Pundits are asking how Sandy might disrupt next week's election. I hope the answer is -- a lot. Climate change is not a hoax, it's deadly serious. If you are decided about climate change, you shouldn't be undecided about your vote.
Is there any hope in this doomsday scenario? Absolutely. Country after country is following the trend set by the European Union to institute a cap or price on carbon pollution.
The linkage between climate change and this Frankenstorm isn't as straightforward as, say, a heat wave. There are several ways that climate change factors in, in large part because this crazy storm itself is so multi-faceted.
Before we can de-carbonize our energy grids, we must first de-politicise and demystify our changing planet and how we as global citizens are directly affected by and responsible for its health.
Sandy truly lived up to its hype as a superstorm. Wind, water, flooding, even snow, has left one of our most densely populated areas paralyzed for days. A record storm by any measure, Hurricane Sandy has left its mark.
Hurricane Sandy may have been downgraded from Category 2 after it barreled through the Caribbean, but it sure didn't feel like it. What was unmistakable, though, was how quickly and completely Sandy downgraded our election.
It is not that people think climate change is a hoax or some massive right-wing conspiracy. Indeed, both candidates have said that it's real. But, ultimately, the consequences (as with the future consequences of anything) aren't knowable in any great detail.
On both the financial catastrophe and the storm, Governor Romney got it completely wrong. Now, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Romney looks all wet.
Global warming is real, and it is here. It is causing -- yes, causing -- death, destruction, and vast economic loss. And the causal effects are getting greater with time. We cannot merely adapt to it. The costs are incalculable. What we are facing is huge.
Hurricane Sandy is a disturbing sign of things to come. We must heed this warning and act quickly to solve the climate crisis. Dirty energy makes dirty weather.
I observed the best in people during this storm. And now, as I look up at the sky, and see the clouds parting, and patches of blue sky, I am grateful I was here to witness this.
As a historic storm hammers the east -- signaling the extremes promised by climate change -- maybe we should listen to the wind. Isn't it telling us to celebrate clean energy's potential and push it forward with new urgency?
'Tis the season for black and orange but let's not forget about green! While we are prepping for ghouls, goblins and sinful goodies, be sure to try some of these simple green tips so that the rest of the year doesn't become an environmental nightmare!
The path to today's wildly unmoored, extreme and embittered Republican Party began not with Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, but with the partnership between big carbon and libertarians to make climate change, and then energy, partisan litmus tests .
