My Style

For those of you who don't know I am a female gamer despite the fact that my gamertag may mislead some. I stand against the fact that most male gamers think we don't know or have the chops to face against them in online battles. Back then there weren't many games for girls to get into and most of the gaming community was based on male gamers. Things are different today, but there are those who think otherwise due to the fact they are wither iggnorant ot odd.

I remember growing up and I knew I would be a gamer, but the video game market wasn't as great as it is today. i remember playing Megaman X for that was the game that got me into gaming and started my gaming lifestyle. My example starts with the fact that most girls are intimidated when talking online because the fact that is a real person on the other end responding. I find myself intimidated, but I still try anyway, what I don't like is that girl gamers get told sexual or rude comments. I mean when a girl plays a game against a guy and the rule was don't beat him because it hurts his ego.

I think we have as much right to prove we have the skills as any male gamer and hold our own either in Halo multiplayer like King of the Hill or capture the flag, scavenger mode and survival if there is one. Just becuase we're girls doesn't mean we don't know what we're talking about whether it's about Halo multiplayer or the different fighting styles and balance of characters in fighting games. We respect the guys when playing and it shouldn't be too much to ask for the same I mean we don't rub in the fact when we beat them unless they were bragging about it non-stop. It's good to be put in your place once in awhile, not during a Halo party filled with drunk or hyped up players.

What my point is that female gamers know video games are made for play and enjoy despite the fact most of the players that buy them are guys. I like Halo, Assassin's Creed and Soul Caliber and even though I am girl, I know my games and I am not ashamed of being a female gamer. So for those of you fellow female gamers out there who hide their gaming skills, you shouldn't, be proud of your lifesyle choice or hobby whether it falls into for I am gamer and that's how I will spend my days until they pput me in the ground!

Worry not girl gamers, I usually judge gamers by their opionions and actions and nothing else: From the Hardcore MP CoD gamer that say "Campaigns are for dipshits with no life" to the L4D player who is reluctlant to share his/her healing items. Gender is not important, games are for a good time after all and I can testify I've found stupid and smart opinions from girl gamers, but as online player in L4D they are mostly competent and grateful when you help them ^^.Sorry for the bad english.

I have to disagree, I think as time has progressed the gaming world has become less female friendly.

For example Pacman was so popular with Girls they went and created Ms Pacman.

Now though main consoles are more or less male dominated games such as the Call Of Duty Series, Gears Of War Series, WWE Series, Halo, GTA etc

Don't get me wrong, I understand there are a small percentage of girls who play Call Of Duty etc

however the majority of players are male.

There are very few games that are particularly made for or mainly played by Females.

Only a couple of games come to mind most commonly being the Sims game series and so on..

As for speaking in a online public game through a mic you are bound to come across some perverted guys that's just how the world is same being with women, You cant judge the whole gender by a couple of lonely or pathetic guys/women. At the end of the day The majority of gamers are there for just that

to play some games.

santinegrete 102 pts

KingWrath  Just to give an example of games made for women: there's a publisher called Her Interactive that's it's known for doing the Nancy Drew games. From their page "Our vision is to be the undisputed leader in creating high quality, fun and inspiring games for girls of all ages. Our philosophy is to create an environment that fosters excellence through the art of creative collaboration. We strive to create high quality synergy between game play, story and aesthetics that result in a fun and engaging experience."Not sure if it's very popular, but they've been for some time now.

I understand there are games out there for women.

I was just attempting to point out there aren't alot of mainstream games that the majority of players are female compared to back in the day of the SNES etc

For example I know alot of girls who would rather just play the first 3 super mario bros on SNES over some of the top games of the 360,PS3,Wii

xsonicchaos 358 pts

I've just realized there aren't many female protagonists or at least multiplayer characters in most first person shooters.

zyxe 116 pts

xsonicchaos that's true. there are a few gems (samus from metroid is one of my favorites, and i'm going to dress up as her for halloween!), but not as many as i'd personally like.

Mothlord 9 pts

zyxe  xsonicchaos Chel I think is her name is from portal. I remember being almost shocked when I saw that simply because there are never female leads, which even as a male I find disappointing some times. I think it is sad that we only see men save the Earth when I know women are just as able.

zyxe 116 pts

Mothlord  xsonicchaos i didn't play portal (i hate jumping and platforms lol) but i did respect that the lead was a female, and it absolutely didn't matter, it was just how it was. that's what i'm hoping for in the future of game development!

How did you know that's what I call it!?!? I give female gamers my "Respect" all the time. Sometimes even more than once. It's a lot like a nice FPS, aim at the target and pull the trigger. Sometimes I even rush in and get out fast, but usually I prefer tactical insertions. I enjoy giving female gamers my "Respect" its the climax of my weekly habits.

The fact that this article has so many comments once again shows how female gamers are seen as 'special' by the community.

PetJel Or it could be the topic for this weeks Chalk Talk :P

KingWrath 5 pts

 PetJel

I Think it has more to do with Gamespot putting this Blog on there homepage which could be taken as Gamespot seeing female gamers as a special case

zyxe 116 pts

KingWrath  PetJel actually, the put a lot of chalk talk submissions on AUB, not sure why, but they end up overlapping severely. most of the "worthy", aka AUB posters with seemingly free reign to get onto the front page, submit articles for chalk talk, and that's why you are seeing a ton there right now. it actually is due to this week's assignment.

Like everything, respect needs to be earned, but it shouldn't have even come to this, it's not jthe 80's where geeky males spend days on arcade machines with pacman etc, just isn't a 'Boy's World' anymore.

If you like games, whatever age group or gender you are, then just play and love your games. If you females happen to talk to a male about a game you like one day and they act like dicks just know that he's probably in the minority(younger generation of lazy ignorant ones probably =P).

i1yas 5 pts

good to know that female also interested in gaming as my little sister sometime gives me advice in adventure and puzzle games but never interested to play herself...

fang_proxy 38 pts

it's a attraction for some guys(including me)i mean if my girlfriend is a gamer that's very cool but once she start playing final fantasy and stuff like halo it's not going to be smooth like it was suppose to be and if a female gamer is playing dark souls i might try to marry her....other than that girls who are over 18 hide their hobby?well they think it's not cool or whatever ??play mature games like bioshock,s.t.a.l.k.e.r,witcher 2,godhand.....now you will get my respect,i can't respect anyone who plays halo and ff try persona, digital devil saga for a change..

crazynotstupid 6 pts

fang_proxy Dude a game is a game. One is not more "mature" than the other. Playing no game is ever "cool". You do it because you like it. The problem I have with girl gamers is communicating, no that I think they 're shit. Usually when I'm talking to girls its either flirting, joking or romantic stuff in a date. But I get extremely uncomfortable seriously talking to a girl about game strategies or tactics and stuff. I found that out twice with two different girls, playing dota with one and company of heroes with the other. I did however have great fun playing a few NFS games with a bunch of girls, but that's probably because there's nothing to discuss about the game.

frayseerz 6 pts

imagine (like in a particular horror movie)

you we're drugged unconscious, and when you wake up

you were in a room full of stranger which will share the same fate.

the only way to survive is to win a competitive game (either DOTA, LOL, CS, Halo, Battlefield, ETC)

you'll fight 2 vs 2.

losing mean death !!!

now my question, if there's a girl in that room.

what are the chances, some total stranger will pick her as his teammate??

if you're in that position, will you pick a girl as your teammate?

remember, losing a game mean death !!!

LoL...

frayseerz 6 pts

there goes your gender discrimination on games :)

hangman000 21 pts

frayseerz I'll choose whoever looks like they play a lot of games

frayseerz 6 pts

when there's a risk, we'll choose with logic.

and i think even the girl in that room, won't choose another girl to be her teammate lol.

the thought of "girl suck at games" are there whether you like it or not haha.

sure there's some "exceptions", just like everything in life, there's always an exception, so that doesn't count.

because in general (i'm sry) girls suck at games, true story.

Fembot_Eulogy 133 pts

Ya, why not? If a girl can game, all the power to her. I wish my wife would game with me, unfortunately she deems the games I play ruthless, violent and a bad example for our children (which seems to be the general consensus of what women seem to think about games).

So guys, even if you get a gamer girlfriend who feels the way she does (and you feel it's excessive), here's my advice. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth!

... and I agree with biggest_loser

ZanarkandTidus 20 pts

Female gamers are some of the most skilled gamers I know and have played and beaten and platinumed some of the hardest games from this generation such as Dark Souls,Demon's Souls and being great Tekken players and people should respect their right to play games :)

MuddVader 86 pts

As biggest_loser said, there is no difference.

sigmact 5 pts

i have some "female gamer" friends, good you girls dont let us play alone ;)

anyway the days when people notided a girl was playing and auto-answering A/S/L with a massive spam of private messages are fading, more and more girls are joining guys (and some few owning them)

the term gamer shouldnt be taken only for man quoting (biggest_loser) anymore, times are changing

biggest_loser 158 pts

One of the ways to avoid discrimination and sexism is to remember that there are no such things as "Girl Gamers", they're just gamers like everyone else. And anyone who tries to turn something as superficial as games into a gender issue, on either side, is a fool.

MadamMim 12 pts

The problem might be that you played with children.  Join a clan or something when it comes to multiplayer. Especially those that require members to be above the age of 18.  They're usually quite mature and sensitive to this sort of thing.  Of course, this is assuming you are a mature adult as well.

tgwolf 145 pts

No, they don't need any more respect than male gamers, and if they don't even stand up for decency when females are being deprecated and demeaned because of the ways that they are portrayed, including and ESPECIALLY in what they are wearing and in most cases how LITTLE they are wearing, then they deserve a lot less respect. I know the political and social rhetoric, and I despise it and dismiss it with disgust. If they can't even be decent people and uphold basic morality but act or refuse to oppose the lascivious examples that they are portrayed as, or if they fall into a disgusting lifestyle as a result, then they are worse than traitors, since men then become victims of having to watch that filth. The same goes for real people that dress that way and so on. No, no respect unless they earn it like everyone else, and so far they are increasingly lowering the status quo in terms of decency, in dress standards and 'private' life. It's not okay, it never was. To you females out there, start walking up to your responsibility or don't even complain.

MadamMim 12 pts

tgwolf Can you explain how one "walks up to their responsibility"?

Fembot_Eulogy 133 pts

Whole-Lotta  jsmoke03  deltamirage That's not what he/she meant at all. It was implying that you cannot demand to be respected. In order to be respected, you must earn it. There's nothing inappropriate about  deltamirage's comment.

what the hell has gender got to do with playing a game? As 49% of gamers (some stat in the paper recently) are women, you're coming out of the closet 3 years too late.  Facebook, freemium gaming, IOS, Android etc, has changed the market completly opening it up to a much wider audience.  Write a blog about how much you enjoy gaming, what sex you are is irrelevent.

zyxe 116 pts

Peazo i'm betting a big reason that g1rl wrote a blog on this particular subject is that it is this week's "chalk talk" assignment. either way, while it is great that more gamers are women these days, i would argue that this 49% is not well-represented in competitive online gaming, and that is a big part of what she appears to be writing about.

zyxe 116 pts

hey g1rl, hang in there. i'm proud of your blog, and don't listen too much to the rude and insensitive comments from guys who really don't get it. it may hurt a bit, but thanks for sharing your experiences and trying to bring this issue to light! that takes a lot of courage, so don't lose heart :)

jsmoke03 200 pts

zyxe its good that you guys are sticking up for each other...but blame all gamers for being rude in general, not just bring up your plight but not bring up the whole problem that people are rude to other people....

zyxe 116 pts

jsmoke03 i have brought that up in various comments. female gamers are typically not asking for preferential treatment, from what i've seen, we would prefer that EVERYONE get treated better than they are now. raise the bar.

jsmoke03 200 pts

zyxe kind of hard to argue when this blog talks about getting respected as a girl gamer

zyxe 116 pts

jsmoke03 it's argued because it's relevant to her. it's not saying the rest aren't important, this is just one issue being focused on at this time, nothing wrong with that. sometimes it's easier to solve a bigger problem by taking smaller bites.

"I am not sure where you live, but maybe while you were hiding you are a girl, you missed that there are almost as many girl players today as male ones, and that it is no longer even special to be a female player (not that it ever was for me). Maybe you should not put such emphasis on the fact that you are a female gamer, and just be a gamer like all the rest of us ;) It is pointless anyway, it is just your skills which can earn you some respect, not your gender - and crying for respect on forums may only lessen it."

I was gonna write something, but Torquille basically wrote everything down I wanted to say.

Anna Sarkessian gets my respect for what she is doing.....not someone stating their a female gamer.

My girlfriend is a huge Black Ops player and has an all-time k/d ratio bordering 1.50. She more than holds her own, but you know if she put on a headset and the room found out she was a girl, there would be 5 or 6 guys talking shit the whole time. Everyone always talks shit to the person that is better than them, guy or girl, because everyone is the best person to play that game and better people must be cheating. especially a female.
