The Deskchair Adventurer

Welcome to The Deskchair Adventurer, a game review site devoted entirely to Adventure games.

What's an Adventure game?
I'm using the term in its classic sense, that is, to describe games that are the descendents of the old text game "Adventure." These are games in which you explore an environment and do lots of puzzle solving. It's a very distinct, recognizable form (although there are the occassional hybrids). Tomb Raider is sometimes described as an adventure game, but it's not. It's a shoot-em-up with the occassional puzzle. Riven: The Sequel to Myst and Day of the Tentacle are adventure games.

Aren't there enough game review sites already?
Yes, there are. But I've never found a site where I always agree with the reviews. My hope is that someone will read some reviews here, say "Hey, this person thinks exactly what I think," and e-mail me to suggest games I would love. It's hard to find really, really good adventure games.

Some of these games are really old, or obscure. What's with that? And why do you review demos? No one does that!
Some games I buy, some games are loaned to me, some games I discover on abandonwarez sites (abandonwarez is old software that is no longer sold, and while it's not strictly legal, people put some of these programs out on the web so people who want them can get them). So it's a really varied collection. I'll play pretty much any adventure game I get ahold of.

As for demos, some are great, some suck, and no one tells you which do which. Good games don't always have good demos, and some poor games have surprisingly good ones. So you do a 50 meg download and it's a pure gamble. And if you don't have the money to buy the game anyway, it's nice to know which demos can give you your adventure game fix, right?

Do you know something I don't?
I've begun adding links to game reviews, official web site, demo, whatever. If you happen to know of any links for a particular game please send them to me.
