Blogs To Read In 2011

I found myself reading fewer blogs in 2010, but these are the sites that found a home in my browser's bookmarks and RSS reader.

Along with my 2010 list and 2009 list, these are the blogs I most recommend to family and friends, and constitute my favorites.

Feel free to add your own favorite blog (or blogs) in the comments.

The Casual Optimist

The Casual Optimist covers books, book design, and publishing with daily news links as well as interviews and interesting features.

notable posts:

Cover Lay Down

Cover Lay Down shares folk covers of popular songs, as well as popular musician's covers of folk songs.

notable posts:

Covered In Folk: Nick Drake

HearYa

HearYa is one of my favorite music blogs, and offers album reviews, music news, mp3 downloads, and live HearYa sessions (presented as both downloadable audio and streaming video).

notable posts:

The Mynabirds HearYa Session
Surfer Blood HearYa session

Slaughterhouse 90210

Slaughterhouse 90210 is the perfect combination of concept and execution. Astutely matching stills from television and film with lines from literature, Maris Kreizman's posts are always guaranteed to make me laugh (and think).

notable posts:

Ricky Gervais/David Foster Wallace
George Costanza/Jami Attenberg

Songwriters on Process

Songwriters on Process, which recently changed its name from Writers on Process, interviews musical artists about the craft of songwriting.

Every other Monday, Storychord features one story, one image, and one song. Curated by Sarah Lynn Knowles, the site has turned me on to more visual artists than any other this past year, and always provides quality writing and music.

notable posts:

ISSUE #1: Tao Lin, Helena Kvarnström, Katie Mullins
ISSUE #17: Tommy Dakar, Melanie Plummer, Sarah Jaffe

Work in Progress

Work in Progress, the blog of publisher Farrar, Strauss, & Giroux, is easily my favorite new blog of 2010. Combining smartly written guest posts by FSG authors, insightful interviews between authors and their editors, and other always interesting features, Work in Progress not only promotes the publisher but also entertains and enlightens its readers.

notable posts:

Two Translators on Nobel Prize Winner Mario Vargas Llosa
Editor & Author: Jonathan Galassi and Jeffrey Eugenides
