A spear fisherman collecting his catch got a wild surprise in an underwater battle with a sea rival.

A man on the lookout for some aquatic prey managed to score a nice sized prize, but as he swam to collect his loot a larger fish, resembling an Atlantic goliath grouper, eyed the catch and decided to nab it, showing the human he was out of his league in the underwater world.

Footage uploaded to YouTube shows the shocked man frantically trying to hold tight to his slithery catch, which some users surmise could be a cod, but ultimately he was just no match for his fishy foe.

Looks good: But the fisherman's glee is short-lived, as a larger fish comes up to nab the catch from his hands

Hey! That's mine: The diver frantically tries to hold tight to his catch

The sea creature gobbled up the catch within seconds and the fisherman unsuccessfully tries to hold fast to the fish's mouth, seemingly trying to retrieve the catch.

The man wrestles his rival but the large creature easily breaks free and is on his way.

Details of the location of the aquatic altercation were scarce.

The footage was first uploaded on LiveLeak.com by Sorsi E Bocconi, based out of Costa Rica on Monday and it soon went viral across the web.

After it made the rounds on YouTube, with various musical accompaniment to dramatize the event, it yielded nearly 40,000 views.

'A pity a great white didn't come along and demolish the idiot human,' one YouTube user joked about the underwater encounter.

'There's always a bigger fish...,' another viewer observed.

Give it back: The man continues to fight but retrieval seems quite pointless

This looks like a "Goliath Grouper" or a big "Nassau Grouper" also known as a "Jewfish".

I loved blackened grouper on a kaiser roll.

He should have gotten his spear gun out for the grouper. And the fish he caught looked like some kind of Snapper. I lived in Florida for a few years, and loved to take the fishing boats out. Number one, I don't know of a single fish that tastes better than fresh grouper. Number two, if he got that Grouper back to shore, it would probably have been worth $1000 to $1500 from the fish brokers at the docks. Bug pay day.

I don't think the diver was trying to retrieve the fish. He was clearly trying to retrieve his hand.

For God's sake DM (aka the New Sun or National Enquirer)......the diver did NOT in any way, shape or form 'almost get eaten'. Get a grip.

The real name for an American goliath grouper is the Jewfish but some overly sensitive group of peope actually lobbied to change its name.

hahaha your headline is over-exaggerated soooo much, he is far from nearly being eaten DM.
