Zimbru Stadium match zone: Tom is United's starter for 10

Manchester United had only one player in the starting XI but they have a monopoly on the No 10 shirt. Ashley Young imposed himself as a replacement for Wayne Rooney during Euro 2012 and Tom Cleverley got the nod ahead of Danny Welbeck in Chisinau. He impressed.

Experience rules

Without what you might call a naturally defensive midfielder, Roy Hodgson elected to smother that area of the pitch with caps. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have 189 between them and ought to be more suited to holding a tactical position than they were in their youth. The jury remain out as Moldova did not provide a true test.

That time of the year

Born in October but Jermain Defoe likes to celebrate a month early. He scored his first goal on his first start in Poland in September 2004, scored two against Andorra in September 2006 and two against Switzerland in September 2010. Eight of his 17 goals have come in September.

Not-so-terrific ton of spot kicks

The penalty for handball in the third minute was England’s 100th ever. Frank Lampard stepped up to score and secure a 69 per cent success rate for his country from the spot. That figure, while not including shoot-outs, might help to explain why England usually end up losing them.

Johnson punished

Glen Johnson may have felt aggrieved to pick up a yellow card for disputing a free-kick and tapping the ball away but he did prevent Moldova taking the kick quickly and capitalising on England’s disorganisation. It was a cheap booking which may return to haunt Johnson later in qualification as Kyle Walker keeps improving.

Careful now: Glen Johnson might regret his booking
