6.03pm: That's it then, just what England wanted. Luke Wright's 99 and a huge contrast in fielding displays are the headlines from this one. How much England can take from it is open to debate, but they will take heart from the fact they have made lighter work of the Afghans than Sunday's opponents India did. Join us for live coverage of that one from 2.30pm. Thanks, as ever, for reading.

WICKET! Naib c Morgan b Dernbach 44

Right on cue, Naib goes for one shot too many and Morgan takes a comfortable catch at cover. A fine knock, well played sir.

18th over: Afghanistan 80-9 (Naib 44, Dawlatzai 0)

Dernbach continues. You feel England will be furious if they don't get this 10th wicket...

17th over: Afghanistan 80-9 (Naib 44, Dawlatzai 0)

Finn goes in search of the final wicket... Four! A misfield form Bairstow at midwicket moves Naib on to 39. In fairness to Bairstow he did get an awkward bounce. Wide called. Four! Naib clips makes room on the off side and clips Finn to the square leg rope. He gets a single off the last ball to keep the strike.

WICKET! Shapoor lbw b Swann 9

Got him! Plumb as you like... A fine, face-saving partnership of 44 though from the Afghan pair.

16th over: Afghanistan 70-8 (Naib 35, Shapoor 9)

Afghanistan need just three more runs to avoid the lowest ever Twenty20 international score. Swann will bowl... Six! Shapoor shows his team-mates how it's done as he tees off over midwicket.

15th over: Afghanistan 64-8 (Naib 35, Shapoor 3)

Dernbach comes back in for a bowl... Close! Naib toe-ends one that falls just short of Bairstow running in from long on. Shapoor fends a single down to third man. Six! He's middled that one... over Dernbach's head and just over the rope. Naib is enjoying himself out there and why not? Shot!!! Brilliant batting from Naib as he pulls Dernbach this time well over the midwicket rope.

14th over: Afghanistan 50-8 (Naib 22, Shapoor 2)

Broad brings himself back into the attack. Naib turns down the single and the run-rate creeps above 23. Four! Naib gets a thick outside edge over the slip. One more is then added back over the bowler's head as Naib mistimes it again.

Stuart Broad

13th over: Afghanistan 45-8 (Naib 17, Shapoor 2)

In comes Luke Wright for a bowl some of his medium pacers. The left-handed Shapoor can't get anything on four short-pitched deliveries... the fifth one is fired down the leg side and is called a wide. One from the over.

12th over: Afghanistan 44-8 (Naib 17, Shapoor 2)

Shot! Naib belts Swann back down the ground for a much-needed boundary. Shot!!! Great character from Naib here as this time he sweeps to the midwicket rope. Another sweep brings two more. Six!!! Brilliant stuff from Naib as the sweeps deep into the crowd at midwicket. Swann didn't concede a run off his first two overs, but he's gone for 16 off that one.

11th over: Afghanistan 28-8 (Naib 1, Shapoor 2)

Patel into his third over... Shapoor whips two runs through midwicket after some more decent fielding from Buttler this time at the rope.

10th over: Afghanistan 26-8 (Naib 1, Shapoor 0)

The lowest score in Twenty20 international history is 67 by Kenya against Ireland... that is surely going to go here. Close! Swann rips one back into Naib and just beats his leg stump. It's a maiden.

Flying start: England ran through Afghanistan's top order

Flying start: England ran through Afghanistan's top order

WICKET! Dawlat st Kieswetter b Patel 0

It goes from bad to worse for the Afghans as another batsman comes and goes slogging.

WICKET! Nabi b Patel 0

All five bowlers have a wicket now as Nabi plays all around one from Patel and the ball clatters into his middle and leg stumps.

9th over: Afghanistan 25-6 (Nabi 1, Naib 0)

It's a wicket maiden from Swann. All four of England's front-line bowlers have started the tournament with a wicket in their first over.

WICKET! Shenwari c Finn b Swann 2

Shenwari tries the reverse sweep and actually times it quite well... but Finn doesn't have to move at the point boundary to take the catch.

Double trouble: Patel picked up two wickets in his second over

Double trouble: Patel picked up two wickets in his second over

8th over: Afghanistan 25-5 (Nabi 1, Shenwari 2)

Graeme Swann comes into the attack to make it spin from both ends.

7th over: Afghanistan 25-5 (Nabi 1, Shenwari 2)

Samit Patel comes into the attack to bowl his left arm spin. Both batsmen get off the mark with singles. Shenwari will keep the strike with a single off the last ball of the over.

6th over: Afghanistan 22-5 (Nabi 0, Shenwari 0)

Two wickets and no runs from that over... This is turning into an absolute mauling.

WICKET! Stanikzai c Bairstow b Broad 4

What a catch! England's fielding has been exceptional... This time it's Bairstow sprinting in from fine leg and diving forward to take the ball inches from the ground.

Another one bites the dust: Broad runs out Sadiq

Another one bites the dust: Broad runs out Sadiq

WICKET! Sadiq run out (Buttler) 5

Excellent fielding from Buttler at square leg. It was a fine shot from Sadiq but he didn't account for a quite brilliant throw from Buttler and sharp fielding from Broad at the bowler's end.

5th over: Afghanistan 22-3 (Sadiq 5, Stanikzai 4)

Sadiq heaves a single away down to third man as Finn moves into his third over. Two more are added via a well-timed clip through midwicket from Sadiq. A single and a leg bye make it five from the over.

4th over: Afghanistan 17-3 (Sadiq 2, Stanikzai 3)

Asghar Stanikzai is the new man in... he gets off the mark with two runs down to fine leg. He'll keep the strike with a single clipped to the same place.

Super sub: Bopara takes a catch for England

Super sub: Bopara takes a catch for England

WICKET! Mangal c & b Broad 8

Great work from Broad. Mangal hammers the ball back at him and gets clings on with his right hand while falling away to the left.

4th over: Afghanistan 14-2 (Mangal 8, Sadiq 2)

Broad brings himself into the attack for Dernbach. Mangal mistimes two runs through the covers.

3rd over: Afghanistan 12-2 (Mangal 6, Sadiq 2)

Finn continues... A single is added by Sadiq. Four! The captain Mangal manages to heave the first boundary of the innings through the leg side. Two wides follow as Finn searches for gloves down the leg side. Mangal keeps the strike with an inside-edged single down to fine leg.

2nd over: Afghanistan 4-2 (Mangal 1, Sadiq 2)

Ouch! Sadiq is clobbered in the helmet by Dernbach. Hales takes a fine catch at second slip and England go up for the appeal... but it didn't hit the gloves. Sadiq pulls two runs through midwicket to get off the mark.

Early breakthrough: Dernbach took a wicket with his first ball

Early breakthrough: Dernbach took a wicket with his first ball

WICKET! Shafiqullah c sub (Bopara) b Dernbach 0

Shafiqullah goes first ball as another short-pitched delivery is sent high into the sky... A nightmare start for the Afghans.

WICKET! Shahzad c Broad b Finn 1

One down, nine to go... Shahzad skies a pull and when the ball eventually comes down (with snow on it) the skipper is there at mid off to take the catch. Just the start England wanted.

1st over: Afghanistan 2-0 (Shahzad 1, Mangal 1)

Steven Finn to open the bowling for England. Shahzad tucks a single to fine leg to get off the mark. Close! Mangal nearly chops on and picks up a single down to fine leg.

4.37pm: England would certainly have taken that score before the match, and they will be pleased that five of the six batsmen to have faced a ball contributed... They will want to gain some confidence with the ball now...

20th over: England 196-5 (Wright 99, Patel 0)

So close! Wright lobs it into the leg side and they can only add two. A fine knock though that has surely won the game for England.

Fine knock: Wright ended unbeaten on 99 runs

Fine knock: Wright ended unbeaten on 99 runs

WICKET! Bairstow c Sadiq b Dawlat 12

Bairstow holes out to Sadiq at midwicket but the batsmen crossed, so Wright will have one ball to try and get three runs for his ton...

20th over: England 194-4 (Wright 97, Bairstow 11)

Dawlat Shapoor will bowl the final over... he's been the pick of this attack today. Wright takes the single. Four! Bairstow mistimes a heave but there's no one there at cow corner and it trickles over the rope. Two singles follow... Can Wright get his ton?

19th over: England 187-4 (Wright 95, Bairstow 6)

Shot!!! Bairstow launches his first ball high into the stands at midwicket... and it's a no-ball to boot. Bairstow works the free hit to long on for a single but it's ANOTHER free-hit... Unlucky! The fielder at long on takes a fine catch but treads on the rope to reprieve Wright and bring him six runs... Six! Wright hammers another six back past the bowler and this is becoming very expensive. Six!!! Three in a row for Wright as Dawlatzai puts it right in the slot. He'll keep the strike with a single... 32, yes (THIRTY-TWO) runs from the over.

Heave-ho: Wright launches another six

Heave-ho: Wright launches another six

WICKET! Buttler lbw b Dawlatzai 15

Buttler swings and misses at an attempted a heave through the leg side and he's struck on the back leg. Taufel's finger goes up - it was hitting leg.

19th over: England 159-3 (Wright 76, Buttler 15)

Four! Buttler powerfully swats four runs through midwicket.

18th over: England 155-3 (Wright 76, Buttler 11)

Jos Buttler the new man in... Oh no! He chips one straight down to the fielder at third man but inexplicably spills it. Four! Buttler makes them pay immediately with a drive through extra cover. Close! Buttler's edge beats the keeper and they add two... Shot! Buttler nonchalantly drives aerially through the covers for four. A single makes it 14 from the over but that doesn't tell the whole story... Good bowling from Nabi.

Cameo: Eoin Morgan produced a useful knock

Cameo: Eoin Morgan produced a useful knock

WICKET! Morgan c Mangal b Dawltazai 27

A smart catch from the skipper just as I was criticising the Afghani's fielding. Morgan mistimed a clip over midwicket and Mangal takes the catch running back.

17th over: England 141-2 (Wright 74, Morgan 27)

Wright squeezes out a single to mid on. Morgan whips the ball through midwicket but some tidy fielding restricts him to two. Four! Morgan makes rooms for himself and hits it over cover for four... it's a no-ball too so we'll have a free hit. Morgan sends it straight down the throat of Shapoor but he drops a dolly at third man... Afghanistan's bowling has been half-decent but their fielding has been suspect to say the least.

16th over: England 131-2 (Wright 73, Morgan 20)

Six! Morgan effortlessly caresses Nabi over the midwicket boundary. A single follows. Oh dear! Horrible fielding at third man sees Wright's reverse sweep run away for four. Six! Wright was nowhere near middling that but such is the power of the man the ball easily clears to ling off rope. Four! Another horrible misfield, this time at deep midwicket. A single makes it 22 from the over.

On the attack: Wright was in fine form

On the attack: Wright was in fine form

15th over: England 109-2 (Wright 58, Morgan 13)

Dawlat Zadran comes back into the attack and immediately cramps the England batsmen for room. They are able to milk singles but four from the over at this stage is a fine effort from Dawlat.

14th over: England 105-2 (Wright 57, Morgan 12)

Morgan brings up England's 100 with a single for Wright milks two into the leg side. One more is then punches through the covers. Morgan lobs over extra cover for two to make it six from a very good over from Nabi.

13th over: England 99-2 (Wright 54, Morgan 8)

Morgan dances down the track and clips a single to midwicket. Six!!! Another monster hit from Wright clears the midwicket rope by some distance. Fifty for Luke Wright! He clips a single to square leg to bring up the milestone. Morgan gets down on one knee to sweep two runs to fine leg before nudging a single to mid off. Shot! Wright fetches one from outside off and belts it flat to the midwicket rope for a one-bounce four. 15 from that over.

Early joy: Karim Sadiq celebrates running out Hales

Early joy: Karim Sadiq celebrates running out Hales

12th over: England 84-2 (Wright 43, Morgan 4)

In comes Nabi to bowl his right-arm off spin. Wright cuts a single. A leg bye is added before Wrigh then works another single. It's been a while since England scored a boundary. A wide is followed by a Morgan sweep for a single.

11th over: England 79-2 (Wright 41, Morgan 3)

Singles are the order of the day as the spinner Sadiq continues. Five from the over again and England are ticking along nicely still. At the current rate England will post 144.

10th over: England 74-2 (Wright 38, Morgan 1)

Morgan gets off the mark with a pull to midwicket. before Wright pulls two to midwicket. He then flicks another two runs this time to square leg. Five from the over and we're at the halfway stage of the innings.

Fine knock: Wright acknowledges his fifty

Fine knock: Wright acknowledges his fifty

WICKET! Hales run out (Sadiq) 30

What a way to go... wright drives back down the ground and Sadiq manages to flick the ball onto the stumps with Hales already on his way.

9th over: England 69-1 (Hales 30, Wright 34)

Close! Wright sends one high into the night sky but the ball lands safely between the fielders on the off side - two runs added. Shot! Wright dances down the track and clobbers Shenwari through long on for a one-bounce four. Hales clips two to midwicket after another misfield - nine from the over.

8th over: England 60-1 (Hales 28, Wright 27)

More spin to come, this time from Sadiq. Hales picks up two to square after a misfield. Two singles follow - a decent over from Sadiq.

Anchor role: Wright takes the attack to Afghanistan

Anchor role: Wright takes the attack to Afghanistan

7th over: England 56-1 (Hales 25, Wright 26)

Shenwari comes into the attack for Afghanistan to bowl a bit of his right-arm spin. Wright cuts a single to the cover boundary. Smart bowling from Shenwari who is turning it both ways... Hales clips a single to mid on. Wright pulls two runs to midwicket to make it four from the over.

6th over: England 52-1 (Hales 25, Wright 23)

Four! Wright continues the flurry of boundaries after a Hales single with a cut down to third man. Shot! Hales doesn't bother running for that one, straight over the bowler's head form a one-bounce four. Four! Hales makes it 14 from the over clipping the ball powerfully along the ground and back past the bowler.

5th over: England 38-1 (Hales 16, Wright 18)

What's that hit?! Shapoor bangs one in just back of a length and the ball rears up and beats batsman and keeper for four byes. Four! Hales calmly finds the gap cutting in front of square. Four! Leg-stump half volley and a poor bit of fielding at fine leg sees Hales' clip run away to make it three four sin a row. Hales takes to single to mid off... Shot! Wright clubs a drive back past the bowler for four. Six!!! That's gone a long, long way over long on from Wright's bat and it's 23 from the over.

Evasive action: Hales gets out of the way as Wright drives back down the ground

Evasive action: Hales gets out of the way as Wright drives back down the ground

4th over: England 15-1 (Hales 7, Wright 8)

Dawlat into his second over. Hales pulls a single to square leg. Shot! A long hop from Dawlat and Wright pulls with ease through midwicket. A good response from the seamer though as the next ball jags back in and nearly cuts Wright in half. Five from the over again - England rebuilding nicely here.

3rd over: England 10-1 (Hales 6, Wright 4)

Shapoor to continue... Hales times two square drives perfectly but can only find the fielders. A single is punched to cover. Four! Wright slightly mistimes that drive, but they all count. Five from the over.

2nd over: England 5-1 (Hales 5, Wright 0)

Close! Hales slashes a cut that just clears slip and runs away for the first boundary of the innings. Close again! Hales pushes straight to captain Mangal at cover and would have been out with a direct hit. Dawlat Zadran gets plenty out of the pitch to Wright, continuing Afghanistan's good start - five from the over.

Got him: Shapoor celebrates the wicket of Kieswetter

Got him: Shapoor celebrates the wicket of Kieswetter

WICKET! Kieswetter b Shapoor 0

Got him! Kieswetter struggled to time it throughout that over and drags the last ball of the over on. Wicket maiden. What a start!

1st over: England 0-0 (Kieswetter 0, Hales 0)

Shapoor Zadran will open the bowling for Afghanistan. The left-arm quick was the pick of their bowlers against India - taking two wickets. Variable bounce straight away on show. Kieswetter is struggling to get him away...

2.57pm: Having said that, it may just be the treatment the Sri Lankans have given it, even England's sounded a bit lively and, dare I say it, musical. Anyway, back to the cricket. Hales and Kieswetter to open for England...

Raring to go: England sing the national anthem

Raring to go: England sing the national anthem

2.55pm: Afghanistan have got a cracking anthem by the way - very energetic.

2.53pm: The players are out on the field for the anthems. It looks like a very poor crowd at the R Premadasa Stadium.

2.45pm: So, England are defending the trophy they won back in 2010. Of today's XI only five of that team remain - Kieswetter, Wright, Morgan, Broad and Swann.

2.37pm: Broad confirmed he would have bowled first too, but it's a good opportunity for England to post an imposing total. They head into this game on form having won both of their warm-up matches against Australia and Pakistan, but they will want to put the low batting total against the latter to the back of their minds.

2.33pm: England have opted to pick Samit Patel over Tim Bresnan, giving Broad two spin options alongside Graeme Swann. Other than that it is as we expected, with the in-form Luke Wright preferred to Ravi Bopara at No 3.

2.32pm: Afghanistan have won the toss and elected to bowl.

2.30pm: Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Sportsmail's live coverage of England's World Twenty20 opener. Victory over Afghanistan today will ensure the holders' progression to the Super Eight stage, but the minnows showed they are no mugs by pushing India all the way on Wednesday and Stuart Broad's side will have to be at their best.
