Micah Richards is ready to boost Manchester City's Champions League hopes by returning to training by the end of the month.

Roberto Mancini feared Richards would miss 10 weeks after suffering an ankle injury, as revealed by Sportsmail.

But the versatile defender has earmarked a return to light training in two to three weeks.

The 24-year-old could be back in the first-team fold by mid-October - in time for the Champions League clashes against Ajax, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund - as long as his rehabilitation goes to plan.

However, he has a fight on his hands to win his right back berth back after being displaced by Pablo Zabaleta towards the end of last season and with the deadline-day addition of Maicon.

Europe's giants will be monitoring Richards's situation.

Juventus made overtures in the summer over a switch, while Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger are known admirers.

He and Zaba will take turns being our right-sided central defender in the 3-5-2 with Maicon storming down the right flank. Haters gonna hate, Meeks the academy boy is going nowhere.

I love Richards as a player hope he has a great career, but don't worry citeh, you can always go and buy another right back, in fact why don't you go to Arsenal I heard there is a right back available for 250 grand a week !

micah is probablythe best attacking defender in the prem however as biased as i am he lacks concentration in defence and mancini sees this and tends to go with thea more safe option of zabbelata when the big games come round, love the guy and has got a great engine

Fantastic news. Shame the lad is so injury prone ontop of the calf problem he already has. Limits his playing time so much, and he's such a good player. Really have missed those bombing runs he does down the wing...

Fantastic news. Think once he's back he'll slot into a back 3 with Lescott and Kompany as part of Mancini's new 3-5-2 formation. Then with Clichy/Kolarov and Maicon/Zaba as wing backs.... I think it's gonna work very well.
