South Melbourne welcomes Prince Charles

RAW VIDEO: Prince Charles receives a warm welcome from onlookers as he visits the Australian Tapestry Workshop in South Melbourne.

Handy excuse, the old polo injury.

The Prince of Wales had just managed to miss the wicket by a good 30 centimetres and he had it at the ready.

"You've got to remember I've broken my arm in two places," he cried. "I can't do it."

Prince Charles had stopped by the MCG on his way to that other of Melbourne's sacred grounds, Flemington.

He was met by officials from Cricket Victoria, players from Victoria's Bushrangers and a multicultural giggle of enthusiastic youngsters from Cricket Victoria's Harmony program. As the young players shied a tennis ball at a single wicket - with considerable success - the Prince was invited to try his arm.

"I knew it," he chuckled.

And missed. By a margin that would have him sacked from a D grade team.

It was time to roll out the old injury.

Royal prerogative, clearly.
