Jedi Knight Collection Now Available On Steam

LucasArts releases entire series to Steam.

LucasArts continues to release its back catalog to Steam at a rapid pace. The latest addition is the entire Dark Forces series, which are widely regarded as some of the best first-person shooters ever made.

It's all there, from the original Dark Forces to Jedi Academy. Dark Forces and Jedi Knight can be had for $4.99, with the expansion Mysteries of the Sith going for $2.99. Meanwhile, the more recent Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy are both available for $9.99.

Originally developed to capitalize on the success of Doom, Dark Forces was a quality single-player experience, and is still regarded as a classic. The series really took off with Jedi Knight though, as both multiplayer and the iconic lightsaber were added to the mix.

For Star Wars geeks, Dark Forces is notable for having made a couple major contributions to the expanded universe. Both Kyle Katarn and the Dark Troopers have appeared in various novels, while fan favorite Mara Jade went the other way and starred in Mysteries of the Sith.

You can either download them individually, or as a complete package. The latter costs $19.99, and all of the games are available now.

I can't believe LucasArts just threw the Dark Forces games up on Steam without updating them or at least patching them to make them compatible with modern PCs.

DO NOT BUY THIS FOR DARK FORCES II: JEDI KNIGHT, LucasArts did NOTHING to make this compatible with modern operating systems or video cards. Not only that, it doesn't have the John Williams background music for it, they completely left it out. I regret buying this, since this isn't the awesome game I grew up with as a kid...

I've been wanting to try out the PC version of Jedi Academy (the mods look pretty fun) for a long time now, but I didn't want to pirate it or have to pay like $40 to buy it.  Hopefully my laptop can run the game as well my xbox could.

damn. THis sounds awesome.  If the multi player is  still working for the outcast games, I may pick this set up.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II was quite a stellar experience, a game that had it not been for half life would be remembered as one of the high water marks for the early modding scene and level design.  In short order modding took over the multiplayer aspect of the game, which was fundementally a well executed experience to start with.  Total conversions and various aesthetic model/texture packs transformed both single player and multiplayer alike.  The level design - particularly the single player levels - is still awe inspiring in parts.  I've scarcely since felt the sense of scale that the designers were able to achieve with such rudimentary tools.

I'd highly recommend everyone to give Jedi Knight and its expansion a go.  If you look closely you'll find a lot of nascent ideas and mechanics at work that became genre standards and a few, thankfully, that did not (FMVs... at least outside of C&C).
