By Okey Alozie

Following the ruling by the Court of Appeal in Owerri, Imo State last Thursday that the sacked Chairmen of the 27 LGAs in the state should go back to work immediately, tragedy struck at the council headquarters of Ikeduru LGA, Iho, Friday.

Former Chief of Staff to the dissolved council, Chief Chinedu Uwaegbulam was reported to have arrived at the council headquarters in the company of the sacked LG Chairman, Mr. Sam Aka. Chief Uwaegbulam’s mission was to inform the Transition Committee Chairman, Mr. Louis Oparaocha that Mr. Aka was around to take over the reins of power as directed by the Court of Appeal.

The Ikeduru TC Chairman was said to have expressed a friendly disposition promising to hand over properly if he got the directive to do so. Then, tragedy struck.

Chief Uwaegbulam was said to have slumped in Oparacha’s office and died. Efforts made by the TC Chairman and other people around to revive him and take him to hospital was said to have failed as he was reported to have died instantly.

Oparaocha who was said to have been terrified by the development disappeared from his office for fear that supporters of the sacked council boss would manhandle him.

In Nwangele LGA, a battle of supremacy was said to have ensued between the supporters of the Transition Committee Chairman of the Council, Hon. Obinwa Etukemka and those of the sacked Transition Committee Chairman, Chief Ezekiel Ezekwesili who also came to the council to take over the reins of power. Fisticuffs were said to have been exchanged between the two groups who tried to out do the other.

Similar incidents were said to have played out at various council headquarters in the state where the sacked council Chairmen tried to take over power in accordance with the judgment of the Court of Appeal.
