Review: Need For Speed: The Run – A Hollywood Racer Stumbling Over Hurdles

November 28th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Review: Need For Speed: The Run

Need For Speed: The Run opens, paradoxically, inside a closing car crusher. Within the next five minutes wheelman hero Jack has escaped from the squashy clutches of metallic cube death, stolen an Audi from his Mafioso captors and, after being followed by them at harrowingly close range and pelleted with gunfire, edges the closest of encounters with a high-speed freight train. It’s a scenario seldom seen in the franchise, and the story it lends itself to aims to create a constant sense of danger, tension and spectacle. However, weighty car handling and the occasional presentational bullseye can’t save the game from its paper-thin story and obsessive desire to adhere to the script. (more…)

Review: Assassin’s Creed Revelations (Campaign)

November 26th, 2011 · No Comments

It’s easy to hold the usual bias against any franchise that releases a product year on year but the bottom line is that Call Of Duty games, EA Sports games and Assassin’s Creeds of the gaming world are handled that way because they’re successful, and they’re successful because they’re consistently good at what they do. Assassin’s Creed Revelations takes what its two incredible predecessors did absolutely right and carries those aspects into this new iteration. Unfortunately, excessive and ultimately unnecessary side-content is also included, and I’m not referring to multiplayer. (more…)

RAGE affirms the importance of story in video games

November 21st, 2011 · 1 Comment

I’ve been up and down on RAGE.  On one hand, the gameplay aspects, mainly driving and shooting, are pretty solid; however, on the other, the game itself is about as common as you can get for a first-person shooter. (more…)

Review: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

November 19th, 2011 · 6 Comments

You could say that Skyrim is just what you expected out of an Elder Scrolls game, and surely, Bethesda hopes you feel that way. However, there is something that rattles you right down to your core when you look over your shoulder at your Housecarl, Lydia, to see she’s staring up at the sky with concern etching her brow. Why? Because there’s a massive dragon that’s been circling you for about five minutes, letting out a few limb-rattling roars that threaten to rip you in half if you don’t find shelter. What does Lydia do? She merely stares up at the sky and then peels her eyes away to give you a questioning glance. Now what?

SG Review: Saints Row: The Third

November 15th, 2011 · 1 Comment

This being my first foray into a Saints Row game, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Sure I fooled around with the second game a bit, but apart from creating a sumo wrestler with a Latina’s voice, I didn’t delve into the craziness that surrounds the series. What was ahead of me was a world so insane, that I dare not spoil it for you. This is something you must experience for yourself. And I’m pretty sure there’s something funny in the water over at Volition HQ.

SG Review: Turtle Beach X12 Gaming Headset

November 14th, 2011 · 1 Comment

Not all of us – and not even I – are sufficiently flush to deck out their gamer cave with a fantabulous sound system.  Instead, we tend to rely on the less than cinema quality speakers that are shoehorned into our TVs.

But, never fear, good denizens of the intertubes: Turtle Beach have a wide range of gaming headsets that should spiffify the audio side of your gaming experience. I’ve had a chance to get ears-on with the most basic model in their new line-up, the X12 headset. Does it sound run-of-the-mill, or does it punch well above its audiological weight?  Find out after the jump!

Review: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Single-Player)

November 11th, 2011 · 1 Comment

I’ve debated whether there’s any point writing this. If you’re even vaguely familiar with the series, then you know what kind of content a Call of Duty contains. It may not come as much of a shock that, in this continuation of the world’s biggest “shoot dudes” gaming brand, there’s very little variation from the norm.

That’s not necessarily bad. The game still achieves things that are genuinely amazing; it’s just that you’ve probably already been amazed by them two years ago.

Review: Jenga® For Mac

It can be difficult approaching a review of a Jenga video game, simply because there’s so little to review that people aren’t familiar with already. Do you enjoy stacking rows of blocks atop each other until they topple, with the last player to stack a successful piece the winner? Great! You’ll enjoy Jenga® on Mac! There’s little more to say unless you’re interested in the nitty gritty, which I shall delve into should you care to continue reading.

1.2 Million Have Played Space Marine – Tonight, I Joined Them

1.2 Million Have Played Space Marine - Tonight, I Joined Them

News arrived today of THQ’s financials from July through to September in what is known as “Q2 of the fiscal year” in the realms of the financial elite. They’re looking great (VG247) but the big bit of news is that Warhammer 40k: Space Marine sold 1.2 million units from its September 6th release through to the end of the month, a time period of three and a half weeks. That’s not bad going for a franchise used to trading solely on PC, although THQ refused to disclose a breakdown of console and PC sales.

Either way, Space Marine looks to have done pretty well, but here’s the thing: I’ve had it on rental for a month and I’ve not touched the damn thing. Maybe it’s about high time I did? I’ve printed a diary of my first 30 minutes in Space Marine below, from 22:49 through to 23:19 on November 2nd: has it justified the 1.2 million copies it has sold? Time to find out for myself.

The Things We Know (And Like To Think We Know) About Grand Theft Auto V

November 2nd, 2011 · 20 Comments

GTA V‘s trailer has gone live, and with it I have produced a comprehensive list of things we know (and the speculation that could follow them) now based on what Rockstar North has packed into the minute and a half long video.

No more filler than that needed: hop on over and have a read and share your thoughts!
