Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool on alert as cash-strapped Derby prepare £4m Hughes auction

Derby County boss Nigel Clough is being forced to cash in on starlet Will Hughes after being told to raise £1.8million in the New Year.

Clough, who has managed to keep the club on an even keel despite cost-cutting at Pride Park, needs to find the additional finance when the January transfer window opens.

And that means the 17-year-old midfielder will be put up for an auction with Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool considering bids.

Clough values Hughes, who has been called into Stuart Pearce's squad for the game against Northern Ireland, at around £4m.

And such is Derby's position at the moment that the former England international would ask for the money in a lump sum.

So far, Arsenal are the only club to make contact with Derby but Manchester City and Liverpool are also known to be interested while Everton have also scouted him recently.

Hughes has signed professional forms with Derby but the Rams can still effectively put him up for sale and such has been his progress that there will be no shortage of takers.

What a load of rubbish! If we sell him, when we are meant to be building a squad with youth and experience to enhance a promotion push in the next season or 2... How would once again selling one of our top players benefit us? If the board are not going to back NC with money to invest in the squad I say it's time the yanks sell up and the Derby faithful force them out! Clough many Derby fans have got sick of the low ambition of the club as shown via attendances home and away.... For once be a No man and refuse to sell him. If we do sell him we should put a price tag southampton did with Walcott, Bale and OX... Because I like Arsenal and Everton if we had to sell thats where I'd like to see him.

As if man city would want him he is not world class quality or he would have been signed now he may go to Liverpool possibly at a push but that is the highest he could go

I rather go for Holtby because he said he was interested in both Arsenal and Liverpool but I'm glad to see that we are looking into the future

Make your move mate, and choose Arsenal FC. Only Wenger tend to give multiple average players, CHANCES AFTER CHANCES.Just take a look at the many average players Arsenal have today in hope of developing them later on. The only A CLASS players at Arsenal today are no more than Gibbs, Varmalen, Arteta, Szczesny, Sagna, Podolski, Wilshere, Cazorla and Chamberlain. Tell me any other so called top club with such deficiency. Everyoone else has contributed largely on the clubs downfall and they all, including AW, should be replaced
