Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks took time out from looking after her newborn son to pick up supplies from her local supermarket on Thursday.

The 38-year-old actress, who revealed she had welcomed a second child via surrogate this week, headed to Whole Foods in Los Angeles with her eldest, Felix, one.

The make-up free mom on the run was dressed casually for the outing and had thrown on a hat to cover her hair.

Elizabeth, who is married to Max Handelman for nine years, announced the arrival of Magnus Mitchell on her website on Wednesday.

The child was born via gestational surrogate, meaning he was conceived using Elizabeth's egg and her husband's sperm.

In a post titled 'It's a boy', she wrote: 'Nothing can match the joy and excitement my husband and I felt when we recently welcomed our second baby boy, Magnus Mitchell Handelman.

The message continued: 'Like Felix, Magnus was born via gestational surrogate. This experience has exceeded all expectations, taught us a great deal about generosity and gratitude, and established a relationship that will last a lifetime.

'I am also so very thankful to our family and friends for their support throughout this process, as well as the Center for Surrogate Parenting for helping make all this possible.'

She signed off: 'I now turn my attention to managing two boys under two. For which I am thankful. And all their poop. For which I am less thankful. Wish me luck.'

In the February issue of America's Lucky magazine she opened up about her struggle to conceive naturally.

'It was a womb issue for me,' she said. 'Embryos wouldn't implant.'

She added: 'But our surrogate is so extraordinary, and she's still in our lives. She's like an auntie.'

It's unclear if the same surrogate was used to carry her second child.

Not being able to have a baby is a sadness that many of us can relate to. This woman has the financial means to have a biological child and I envy her for that. My congrats to her and wishes for a lifetime of happiness with her family.
