Jessica Simpson's father pleaded no contest earlier this week to driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or above in Van Nuys, California.

The L.A. City Attorney's Office confirmed news of the plea - which resulted in probation for the 54-year-old -  to multiple news outfits.

Joe was sentenced to 36 months' probation, fined $390 plus penalties and ordered to complete a three-month alcohol-education program.

A separate count of driving under the influence stemming from his August arrest was dismissed.

The charge was a misdemeanor which meant Joe wasn't required to be in court.

His lawyer, Shawn Holley who also represents Lindsay Lohan, entered the plea on his behalf.

Last month, Joe and wife Tina Simpson - also parents to Ashlee - announced they were divorcing after 34 years of marriage.

Joe – who is also a manager to both of his daughters - was stopped by officers on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, at around 10pm on August 4 and the police thought he was intoxicated so arrested him.

He was booked and spent the rest of the night in a cell. He was released at 9:41am the following day and did not have to post bail.

He was later charged with two misdemeanour counts of DUI.
