Mandalay is also the economic and religious center of Upper Myanmar. Places of interest around the city are the old Royal Palace, Mandalay Hill and Zaychotaw Market. Gold leaf making, tapestry weaving, stone carving, and silk weaving are also interesting and worth visiting the workshops.
Bagan is the main tourist attraction in Myanmar. It is one of the richest archeological sites in Asia and the capital of the first Myanmar Empire. Bagan covers an area of 42 square kilometers containing over 2000 well preserved pagodas and temples dating from the 11th century. The founder of Bagan Empire was King (1044-1077). Nowadays, numerous pagodas and other religious buildings, many of them in ruins, can be visited. They are an irrefutable proof of the prosperity of the Bagan Empire.
Is a vast picturesque lake, 900 meters above sea level, is another of the main tourist attractions in Myanmar. The lake, 22 km long and 10 km across, has a population of some 150,000, many of whom live on floating islands of vegetation. Inlay Lake, natural and unpolluted, is famous for its scenic beauty and unique leg rowing of the lnthas, the native lake dwellers.
The mystical Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda stands on a gold gilded boulder, which is precariously perched on the edge of a hill and is over 1100 km above sea level. There are many legends about this pagoda and its 'nats' or spirits.
Myitkyina is the capital city of Kachin State. From Myitkyina, visitors can tour the confluence (Myitsone) of the Malikha and Maykha Rivers, the source of the Ayeyar-waddy River. Kachin Traditional Manau Dances are performed yearly on Kachin State Day. There are regular flights to Myitkyina from Yangon and Mandalay.
Putao is situated in the northern most part of Myanmar. Putao is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and is cold the whole year round. There are many varieties of citrus fruit grown in the orchards. It is the nearest town to the base camp for climbing Mount Khakabo Razi (5889 meters), which is at edge of the Himalayas and is the highest mountain in Myanmar and Southeast Asia.
