Beware of the backlash: Carrick warns United ahead of Liverpool clash

Michael Carrick believes Manchester United must be wary of a Liverpool side that will be determined to bounce back from their slow start to the season when the two clubs meet on Sunday.

Liverpool have yet to win a game in the Premier League this season under new manager Brendan Rodgers.

Much of the build-up to the game has been focused around the fallout from the Hillsborough report, but Carrick has called for focus ahead from his team-mates ahead of a tough Anfield assignment.

'These games are a one-off - form goes out of the window,' said Carrick, who scored United's winner against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

'The atmosphere is that little bit more special and the fans are certainly up for it more.

'The fact that Liverpool haven’t had the results they wanted so far doesn’t really come into it - that’s not on our minds.

'It’s about us going there and doing the right things.

'We’re expecting Liverpool to bring their best game and we’ll have to bring our best game too to get a result.'

United have not won in their last five visits to their fierce rivals, and Carrick is hoping to put and end to that record on Sunday.

'It’s something we’re hoping to put right and hopefully that starts this weekend,' he said.

'I enjoy it - it’s one of the best games to play in. To play in games like that are the ones you remember, especially the ones you win.

'It’s a special game of football. As a player, you appreciate what it means to everyone and the stature of the game in world football.

'It’s up there with any game in the world. Just to sample the atmosphere is special. Hopefully the game can live up to it.'

United will have to match Liverpool for work rate because Liverpool always up the anti for United. If United do that then I think United will win because, in my opinion, United have the better squad. But this is Liverpool's biggest league game of the season and they will pull out all the stops. If Liverpool win Rodgers will be the bees knees, if they lose and a few more results go against them then he could be up the road.
