A mother and father have been jailed for allegedly shackling their teenage son to a chair every night for six months.

Virginia Smith, 63, and her husband Douglas Smith allegedly handcuffed the 17-year-old and used padlocked chains to pin him to a chair.

He was chained in the living room of the family home in Twentynine Palms, California overnight and only released the next day, investigators said.

San Bernardino County sheriff's investigators told KCDZ that the boy is in good health and is now in the custody of a family member.

Investigators became aware of the alleged abuse after the teen told a relative about the treatment last Thursday, Sheriff's Sergeant Jason Radeleff said.

Virginia Smith was arrested the same day at her home in the 1600 block of Sunrise on suspicion of child cruelty.

The boy's father turned himself in at the sheriff's station on Saturday afternoon and was also arrested, KCDZ reported.

Your comments:some of you people are out of your F"in minds! What the hell is wrong with you? No child should be chained to anything for any reason EVER. I don't care what he did. if these allegations are true these people should go to jail for a very long time, chained to their cots.. I work at the same location as one of the accused and i just cannot believe this. If its I hope they rot in jail,.

I wonder why the grandparents had to chain the kid. I think maybe the kid was sneaking out at night and doing who knows what. What are we supposed to do with juvenile delinquents who sneak out at night ?

Excuse me - these parents/grand (kinda obvious) probably had a good idea on how to ground a SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD. I'm surprised that they didn't need to get more forceful. WHY were they arrested? What did they do wrong? Do you suppose he might be taking off in their car as soon as they went to bed? Hm. Maybe the ccourts would prefer to raise him. I'm sure we wouldn't mind paying for that program.
