Over-60s must act now to claim Government’s Winter Fuel Payment
Don't suffer in silence: Every household with someone born on or before July 5, 1951, is given between £100 and £300 to put towards their energy bills
The over-60s need to apply now to claim the Government’s Winter Fuel Payment of up to £300.
As the cold weather kicks in and energy prices continue to rise, every household with someone born on or before July 5, 1951, is given between £100 and £300 to put towards their energy bills.
If you are over 60 then you will receive £200. Those aged over 80 will get £300.
If there are two or more over-60s in the house then you’ll each get £100. For homes with two or more over-80s, each person can claim £150.
You’ll receive £100 if you qualify and are younger than 80, but the other person in the house is aged 80 or over.
If you have claimed the payment previously, or receive the state pension, you do not need to do anything. You should have your money by Christmas.
Those who qualify but do not get paid automatically need to claim by March 31, 2013. You can do this online via gov.uk or call 0845 9151515. Report any change in your circumstances as this can affect how much you get. For example, if the qualifying person stops getting a benefit, moves out, dies or goes into care.
You cannot get a winter fuel payment if you’ve been in hospital getting free treatment for 52 weeks or if you’ve been living in a care home for at least 12 weeks and get an income-related benefit, for example pension credit.
Furthermore, every time there is a seven-day period of very cold weather between November 1 and March 31, you can also get £25 through the Government’s Cold Weather Payment Scheme.
Cold weather is where the temperature falls below freezing for seven days in a row.
