Guitarist Confirms Completion Of New ALICE IN CHAINS Album - Dec. 5, 2012
According to The Pulse Of Radio, ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell has confirmed to Guitar World that the band has finished recording its fifth studio album and second without original vocalist Layne Staley. The new disc will follow up 2009's "Black Gives Way To Blue", which ended a 14-year gap between studio efforts for the group and featured singer/guitarist William DuVall. Cantrell said, "In my opinion, that record stood up to anything else we've put out in our career and this new one is right up there, as well."

ALICE IN CHAINS began working on new material in 2011, but the sessions for the album were delayed when Cantrell had to undergo shoulder surgery.

He said that the pressure in following up "Black Gives Way To Blue" was like "having to deal with the sophomore jinx for the second time in our career."

ALICE IN CHAINS all but faded from the scene after the release of its self-titled third album in 1995. Staley's death in 2002 seemed to seal the band's fate as well.

But Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez regrouped in 2006 with DuVall, first for several tours and then eventually to create new music.

Although no official release date has been confirmed yet for the new album, it is likely that the disc will make its debut in early 2013.

It's been 3 years since Black Gives Way to Blue came out. I'm looking forward to the new album.

When I first heard of Black Gives Way to Blue, I thought it would suck because of the fact that Layne wasn't on that record and it took a while for me to like it more. I hope the new record will be as good as Black Gives Way to Blue and Dirt as well.

Bring it, this lineup is a fitting tribute to the memory of Layne.

I also dig how much guitar William DuVall plays in the band now. It was a correct, inspired choice to go with him. He has his own vibe and look, but he gels effortlessly with the rest of the band. He does honest justice to the the music: then and now. I'm really happy and proud of them all for doing it right. Can't wait to hear the new album. Good for you, guys. Rock on.

So it's OK to slate Thin Lizzy, but new Alice In Chains is cool?

"Black Gives Way To Blue" was nothing more than a glorified Cantrell solo album with an AiC sticker - It was just on a par with "Degredatin Trip" & "Boggy Depot", nothing more, nothing less.

Cantrell may have been the songwriter, but it was Staley's voice that really gave them the edge, and it was the only thing that ever separated Cantrell's solo material from AiC material.

Really disagree with this post. Black Gives Way to Blue is different and better than Cantrell solo cds. You have the vocal harmonies, and less experimental stuff than Cantrell solo cds., which I liked (Degradation I liked better of the two)

To each their own, but do not see Layne's voice as the only seperation between Cantreel solo stuff and AIC

I hated the last album. I wanted to like it. My not liking has has nothing to do with Staley's absence. It was just a boring album. Looking forward hearing the new album.

Although this does not change the fact that it was another Cantrell solo album, more or less... BUT Degradation Trip is better than all AIC records, including the last one, so... No problem here.

Obviously, you can't replace Layne. He was unique. But Duvall is a good singer with a different personality. Hopefully, there will be more lead vocals by Duvall on the new record - the last one was almost completely Cantrell-lead. Duvall is a better singer than Cantrell and he should really front AIC now.

I cannot wait! Black Gives Way to Blue was incredible.

Also, Cantrell's solo albums (particularly Degradation Trip) are waaaaaay underrated. They are absolutely just as good as anything AIC, and AIC is my favorite band.

Cantrell IS Alice in Chains.

the title track was amazing on last album, the rest didn't suck either, Cantrell is a songsmith and it shows, Layne would've made it better, but what is there to do, death is pretty final.. ok?

AIC are legends, DuVall is a great vocalist and I really dig BGWTB, still play many of the songs. Material wise I would say it's possibly as a whole the 2nd best one they've done, and the heaviest. Check My Brain is one of the best songs they've ever done.

I was apprehensive about the AIC relaunch and thought it was injustice to Layne. Layne was a huge part of the AIC sound. However, after hearing Check My Brain and then reading interviews with Jerry and William, how they wanted to honor Layne's memory, I got the album and quickly got over it. The album is amazing, not a bad track on it. From the opening lines "Hope, a new beginning.." to the last note of the album, it's a great body of work. That said, I think "Private Hell" is my fav song on there, just a well written and arranged song. Can't wait for the next one.

I think Degradation Trip is at least equal best with anything else Cantrell has ever been involved in, that music is unbelievable.
