Interviews

“I can’t get enough of collaborating with people … In Sydney there’s a real community of singer-songwriters at the moment who are willing to get together and jam out on a few songs. Which makes the whole experience really refreshing especially when you get caught up in trying to write songs by yourself. It’s always cool to get together a group of mates and do it”Patrick James chats to Gareth Hugh Evans. Interview here

Track by Track

“[Hello Bright Eyes] was written when I was driving a Chaser bin (which is a tractor with a tailored trailor that follows the header to pick up the grain at harvest time) for a neighbour two summers ago. I was all day in lovely big paddocks and I think the sunlight made me a little vague”Fanny Lumsden & The Thrillseekers, Autumn Lawn EP. Track By Track here

Friday Folk Flashback

“Nancy Spain” – Christy Moore

So much of my early folk music education centres around my Dad’s obsession with Christy Moore. This song in particular was a favourite in our house and if you’re a fan of Irish contemporary folk music it doesn’t get much better than this.

The Trouble With Templeton started out as the solo project of Brisbane singer-songwriter Thomas Calder but has somehow evolved into duo, then a trio and now a five piece. And now that this newly minted band has finally settled on its full lineup (we assume) they have released a brand new track titled “Six Months In A Cast”, a frantic, acoustic guitar driven track which is quite a departure from their (his?) last single “Someday Soon”. Take a listen below:

The Trouble With Templeton will be performing at Bigsound in Brisbane on the 12th September as well joining Julia Stone as the support on the VIC and NSW leg of her solo tour. Check out the full list of dates below:

Did you catch Michael Kiwanuka while he was in the country for Splendour in the Grass? If you didn’t you’ve no doubt heard by now just what an amazing talent this man is, mixing elements of soul, old school r&b, blues, folk and gospel to create truly wonderful music. Kiwanuka’s latest single is “Bones” and it naturally has a brand new video to go along with it. Watch “Bones” below:

Martha Tilston Reveals New Album

Martha Tilston

Martha Tilston was a revelation at the National Folk Festival a couple of years ago. She was the last artist I saw in what was a packed festival and to be honest I only stopped by her concert because it was on the way back to my campsite but I was absolutely blown away by her music and walked away with her entire back catalogue of CDs.

Tilston has just announced her brand new album titled Machines of Love and Grace. The album will be released on the 1st October which will then be followed by a UK tour. I wonder if there’s any way we can coax her down our way again some time soon?
