CS Member News: Summer

May 22, 2012

Hello there Crooked Still fans!

Curious about what is going on in our various lives?

Aoife has been hard at work creating new songs for her solo album and running half marathons.  She’s been a frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, singing with her old pal Heather Masse, and will be teaching at 4 music camps and workshops this summer.  Tomorrow, Aoife heads to California as a member of Noam Pikelny‘s touring band.  They’re playing in BerkeleyGrass Valley, and at the Strawberry Music Festival.  Don’t miss it.  In June, Aoife hits the road on a headlining tour of some killer northeast venues, backed up by her longtime country-folk-rock band.  July will find her at festivals like Greyfox and Rockygrass, and in August, she’ll play a free show in Brooklyn opening for Lyle Lovett.  Full details can be found at www.aoifeodonovan.com, where you can also sign up for her mailing list.  James Reed at The Boston Globe just wrote a lovely article about all this- check it out here.

Brittany has been busy brewing kombucha, gardening, playing and teaching. This summer she’ll be teaching at 6.5 fiddle camps from Alaska to Florida and parts in between. She’s also gigging regularly with fellow fiddler and Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings alum Lauren Rioux, as well as the occasional appearance (at 2 Canadian folk fests) with Abigail Washburn & Kai Welch, Nashvillian guitarist Russ Barenberg, Bostonian power-woman Laura Cortese, and master of all things musical Darol Anger with his new band, the Furies. For the full details, see www.facebook.com/BrittanyHaasMusic or www.laurenandbrittanymusic.com.

Tristan has been busy with his acoustic trio, The Bee Eaters; they just wrapped up a tour of the northwest with bluegrass legend, Laurie Lewis.  Look for Bee Eaters shows around the northeast in the fall.  Tristan will be spending most of June holed up in a tipi in the northern California mountains, writing new music and preparing an epic lineup for his 8th annual Summer String Summit concerts, uniting literally dozens of acoustic music luminaries such as Tim O’BrienAbigail WashburnBrittany Haas… If you’re anywhere near California on July 11 or 15, don’t miss this!  Details at ShastaMusicSummit.com or TheFreight.org

Greg is busy touring and recording a new album with the Deadly Gentlemen.  They are playing this Tuesday (TONIGHT, folks!) at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA, then heading out to Colorado to start their summer tour.  Look out for them at lots of great festivals such as Pagosa Folk ‘n’ BluegrassGrass ValleyROMP; the Greater New Bedford Summerfest; and the Northwest String Summit.  Their full tour schedule can be found at www.deadlygentlemen.com

The only homeowner of the bunch, Corey has been spending some quality time in Vermont working on fixing up his house.  He recently finished replacing his garage roof and is glad to be back on the ground and playing music again!   He’s been performing on and off with the great David Wax Museum and is about to embark on a 5 day Northeast mini tour with them to Boston, New York, Philadelphia and DC.  You can find the dates here.  In addition to being a freelance bassist, Corey has been tour managing for our good friend Sarah Jarosz where he gets to put to good use many of the business skills he acquired over the years touring with Crooked Still.  It’s a new role for him and one that he is enjoying.  Look for him this summer on the road with her.  In August, Corey will be on staff at the Maine Fiddle Camp and Valley of Moon Scottish Fiddle School.

That’s all for now.  Have a great summer!

Hi Everyone,

We just finished up an amazing west coast tour that took us from Seattle, WA to San Luis Obispo, CA and then one off stops in Austin, TX and Montreal, Quebec!  Thanks to everyone for coming out to the shows and making the tour a success.

This weekend we’ve got a three show mini-tour as a special bonus for our fans in New Jersey and upstate New York. We’ve got shows in Princeton, NJ, Oneonta, NY and Albany, NY starting tomorrow!

These will be our last three US shows before we head to the Woodford Folk Festival in Australia over New Years and then take next year off.  It should be a blast!

West Coast Tour, Aoife appears on The Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno Tonight!

October 25, 2011

Hello Everyone,

Thanks to all of our amazing fans who came out to support us on our east coast 10 Year Anniversary Tour!  It was an incredible two weeks culminating in two very special nights in front of our home town Boston crowd at the Somerville Theatre. We even had our original cellist, Rushad Eggleston join us for the first time in four years for some very memorable double cello action!

The good news is that next week we take the show to the west coast!  We love touring on the west coast and can’t wait to return to many of these fine venues.

The Goat Rodeo Sessions

In other news, our singer Aoife O’Donovan will be appearing onThe Tonight Show with  Jay Leno as part of Yo Yo Ma’s Goat Rodeo Sessions tonight!  Aoife is the guest vocalist for two tracks of this star studded ensemble that includes Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, Stuart Duncan and of course Yo Yo Ma.  It’s an amazing CD and we’re proud that Aoife was asked to be a part of it.  If you tune in tonight you might also be interested in what this up and coming politician named Barack Obama has to say as he’s the featured guest on this evening’s program.  Tune in at 11 PM eastern time on NBC.

10th Anniversary Tour and EP

September 23, 2011

We still can’t believe it every time we say this, but Crooked Still has been a band for ten years!  Our first “gig” was a one-song performance in a New England Conservatory recital back in the fall of 2001.  We worked up our version of Darling Corey, and that arrangement is still one of our favorites to play.  We are truly honored and excited to have come through so much and still be able to play the music we love for all of our fans.  Thank you for a fantastic decade!

In honor of this momentous anniversary we’ve got a fantastic tour lined up in the Northeast in October.  We’ll be playing ten shows in the tenth month to celebrate turning ten!  To make our hometown Boston shows even more exciting, we’ll be joined by our original cello player Rushad Eggleston and long-time collaborator Ruth Merenda for both concerts at the Somerville Theater.  There are sure to be other special guest appearances as well.  It should be an incredible weekend not to be missed.

Importantly, we are taking a year off the road in 2012, so this might be your last chance to see us for a while!  While there will be a few special appearances throughout next year, we are planning a much-needed break from the constant touring of the last several years.  More on that later!

To make the occasion even more special we’re releasing a brand new recording entitled Friends of Fall.  Here’s the official press release:

Friends of Fall, the new 7-song EP from Crooked Still, offers a fresh and vibrant look at Boston’s most innovative folk group on the eve of their tenth anniversary. While Crooked Still is well known for its one-of-a-kind interpretations of traditional American folk songs, Friends of Fall showcases the band’s compelling approach to contemporary and original music. This unique song collection coincides with the band’s 10-year anniversary tour in October and features covers of the Beatles, Paul Simon, and John Hartford as well as original pieces and a musical adaptation of a Wendell Berry poem.

Crooked Still recorded Friends of Fall in the midst of a busy summer tour, convening for three days in a beautiful former church house, now the site of Rotary Records studios in West Springfield, MA. For this special project, each band member personally arranged and directed the entire ensemble for a single song. Recorded and mixed by two of the finest engineers from Nashville, TN (David Sinko, Erick Jaskowiak) these gorgeous recordings capture Crooked Still’s signature live energy and dynamic musicianship, as well as standout performances by lead singer Aoife O’Donovan.

Hope to see you at the shows!
