The nominations have arrived for the 2013 Oscars, and Lincoln is leading the field once again with a whopping haul of 12 nods.
The film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting actress, backing up its sweep of nominations at yesterday’s BAFTA announcement.
Elsewhere, Life Of Pi, Argo and Les Miserables all scooped a host of nominations, while Silver Linings Playbook also scored well in the acting categories, amassing an impressive eight nominations in total.
Skyfall suffered a disappointment though, failing to register any nominations in the major categories. Adele did at least get the nod for Best Original Song for her title track.

So many great films were completely snubbed this year. The Dark Knight Rises, Looper, Skyfall and The Hobbit to name a few. Surprised Howard Shore's score for AUJ didn't get a nomination. It's equally as fantastic as his work on LOTR. I've a feeling that it was snubbed simply because of the critical reaction. The Academy seem to have gone full hipster lately.

Actors and creative crew are more interested in the Oscars as it's great on the CV, studios just care about cold hard cash, so I doubt anyone involved with The Avengers, TDKR or Skyfall really care, It's allowed them to carry on with the next in the franchise. I can't see a Lincoln 2 or Life of Pi Returns :)

Jameskeely - completely agree with you apart from the Looper, Skyfall and The Dark Knight Rises bit. not sure why you thought The Dark Knight Rises would be as it is an inferior film to The Dark Knight and that didn't get nominated for best picture. No Bond film has ever been nominated for a best picture oscar why should the trend change now with Skyfall which despite people falling over themselves praising it, was average. Looper, didnt exactly set the world on fire from a box office perspective and apart from being fairly high concept, it wasn't exactly inception was it. I would be surprised if the Hobbit films pick up any nominations except for those in the technical areas as they already won a ton with the LOTR trilogy.

Chufferstud - That statement is not entirely accurate, conservative estimates are that a film that wins an oscar in a major category can add $30m to its box office gross. This is why studio's and industry bigwigs especially people like the Weinstein's lobby heavily for their films come awards time. Obv this is not much to a major film production but can do wonders for smaller films such as Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi etc

I can tell you right now Adele's Skyfall will win. Just watch it. They will pay tribute to the 50 years of James Bond, then present the nominees for best song and Adele will win. Why? One because she deserves it. Two, because it would be very embarrassing for the Academy if while they celebrate 007, Skyfall would not win. It would not be good. Besides, that James Bond tribute is for me the only reason I would watch the broadcast this year.

"That French actor from Amour" Brilliant! Good to see someone not IMDBing it and acting like they just know the guys name. The only thing I will say in defence on the academy is that they have to give awards for a specific role in the process. The Dark Knight Rises, Looper and The Avengers are all great films but could you see any awards going for direction, acting or screenplay? Really good across the board but not award worthy. Looper was the best film I've seen in a while but it was just a good job done by all without anyone really standing out as exceptional. Apart from, as I said, the film. I suppose the only category for films like this would be Best Picture but unless they are nominated for other awards that wont happen. Unfair but that's the way it goes.

I agree about The Hobbit and Dark Knight Rises! Both fantastic, haven't even heard of about half of those nominees. I really think Martin Freeman should get some recognition for playing Bilbo - genuinely loved his performance, he was genuinely born to play him!

Beth, the Oscars are as predictable and calculated as mathematical equations. The Hobbit does deserve to be nominated and to win but it has a huge flaw; it is the first of three movies. Meaning that it is best to way until the release of The Hobbit: There and Back Again to find out if the Academy can afford to ignore Martin Freeman.

Great to see they didn't stump for Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, or Prometheus. All three were a big disappointment and hugely overhyped. The Imposter really should be in Best Documentary, though. Maybe the Oscars comittee didn't bother watching it.

I don't know about Prometheus, but it is a fact that neither Skyfall nor The Dark Knight Rises were disappointments or overhyped. The rest of the world knows that and has proved it with the huge box office numbers they generated. No matter how one's taste can cloud judgement, reality cannot be denied.

I have really lost respect for the Oscars. Just American self-praise as usual. They do so adore themselves. In reality, Lincoln was just a sly politician caring for his own position and the slaves mattered little to him. Did he found Trade Unions? Create an NHS or a Welfare State? Did he cure America of racism or hatred of gays? Personally, I feel Howard Shore deserves just recognition for his outstanding music. Peter Jackson is an extraordinarily talented director. But "the Hobbit" is not an American film. Just a brilliant one.

OK, a few comments - FIRST The Academy is not 12 blokes in a room with an agenda against 'good cinema' or British-produced film or British Actors/Directors etc as many people seem to believe. It is an organisation with thousands of members who probably don't find British films/talent nearly as exciting as we do. SECOND - I have already explained why TDKR (which if directed by anyone but Nolan, would have been ripped apart), The Hobbit (my fave film of 2012 incidentally) and Skyfall didn't deserve a nomination, but to add to the mix, Holy Motors was a mess that no-one (even TF and Empire) understands.Films that are generally bats**t crazy do not get nominated for oscars much to the chagrin of pretentious film fans.-Third - It will be very interesting to see who walks away with Best Actor. Whilst it appears DDL is a lock for it, if he wins, he will be the first man ever to win 3 Best Actor Oscars. Which in the view of the academy, would make him the 'Greatest Actor Ever'. The Academy in the past has been reluctant to do this,demonstrated by the fact that Hoffman, Brando, Hanks, Penn and Nicholson have each been nominated 5 times or more and have never won more than 2,Spencer Tracy was nominated 9 times and only won twice. It is because of this that I have a slight inkling that he won't win and perhaps someone like Hugh Jackman may take the award.

Andy Serkis needs to be given an Oscar for his contributions in playing Smeagol (Dude deserved it , he played both Kong in King Kong & played Caesar in Rise of the Planet Of The Apes)....I don't what category it will fall under but that guy deserves something. It is a pity that Nolan always gets snubbed for best Director...and I am pretty sure Tarantino will not get any winnings....(remember 2009...? Hurt Locker got most and Inglorious b*****ds only got a best actor)...same will happen here Zero dark Thirty will win a lot of awards trust me. Life of Pi will win Visual effects and nothing else. Lincoln will win best adapted screen play (The Academy won't want to give Spielberg a lot of what he deserves remember War Horse?)
