Audi TraditionGoodwood Festival of Speed 2012

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed from June 29 to July 1, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason was on the starting line for the sixth time. After five years in which he took the wheel of an Auto Union Silver Arrow, he drove an Audi Sport quattro S1 on this occasion and once again received a heartfelt round of applause from more than 150,000 spectators.

The Audi Sport quattro S1 was the car that Walter Röhrl drove in the 1986 Monte Carlo Rally, with Christian Geistdörfer as his navigator. Nick Mason’s comment on this legendary rally car: “Fantastic!”

A childhood dream comes true
André Lotterer also drove the Audi Sport quattro S1 at the Goodwood Festival – the fulfilment of a childhood dream only a short time after his victory in the 2012 Le Mans 24-hour race.

A dramatic blend of the traditional …
The history of the Goodwood hillclimb goes back to 1936; today the event is held on a course 1.86 kilometres long. This year as always, many celebrities were guests of the Earl of March and Kinrara in the grounds of his country house – racing drivers past and present, world champions, Le Mans winners and Formula 1 stars.

… and the modern
Much of the appeal of this annual event comes from its blend of oldtimers and current competition cars. An absolute highlight this year: the Le Mans winner, the Audi R18 e-tron quattro.
