It hardly competes with Google -- in fact it's really a different product that uses the social layer that Facebook offers to answer questions you might have, many of which you wouldn't go to Google for anyway. (For example, who are my friends in San Francisco?)
I believe that the prosecution for the United States threatened Swartz's emotional and physical well-being, and, faced with a court battle that he could not possibly finance with his own personal wealth, he took his own life. It bullied Swartz, and it should be held responsible in some way.
Who came out on top this past holiday season? Shoppers like you and me, hands down. Yet, there's no secret why merchants are getting smarter. They have to. Today's 20/20 digital consumer is dictating the terms of the shopping experience.
Facebook was developed by teenagers, for teenagers and I wonder if it, and its cousins Pinterest, Twitter, Reddit and Google , are not turning us all into adolescents. Adults conduct their social interactions differently than teens and young adults but the constructs of social media invite us to sound like our younger selves.
CBS over the course of a couple of days also managed to trash sizable part of a $1.8 billion investment. All in all, not a bad weekend's work. The question now is: how do you dig yourself out of a big hole, assuming you even want to?
There's cause to feel optimistic about the ability of women to be even bigger players in high growth entrepreneurship in the not-so-distant future -- and it's a byproduct of several things.
Swartz's persecution can't be passed off as an isolated incident. Instead, it feels more like the exclamation point on an administration whose commitment to maintaining secrecy, blocking transparency, limiting the flow of information and squelching dissent has been both unexpected and shocking.
I've been speaking with researchers who participated in Biden's meeting with leaders of the video game industry on Friday, and they're in agreement that there's no evidence of a link between violent videogames and violent people.
What happened to driving in a car and just looking out the window? Your kids are giving up the entire physical world for this narcissistic/sychophantic/addictive need to follow someone or see who's following them.

As the public confronts the tragic loss of that astonishing hacker, who for too short of a time poured his soul into making the world a better place, who improved everyone's life who uses the Internet, maybe this time we can see a different side to hackers.
Nothing can bring Aaron Swartz back. But if his death serves to shed light on these issues, if the American people finally demand answers about these perversions of justice, I like to think he'd be happy about that.
This week's startup roundup covers apps and services that aid travelers before and during a journey, but also includes operational tools for travel companies that are working to engage with travelers online and meet them where they are, which is more often than not, on their mobile device.
You don't have to be a futurist to see tomorrow's hottest new technology and innovation trends before they hit -- just willing to click a bit further than "Best of CES" round-ups that focus on jaw-dropping products alone.
Dell shares are going bananas right now on rumors of a magical unicorn rescue, also known as a private equity buyout.
It's been amusing to watch the speculation around Google Chairman Eric Schmidt's visit to North Korea. The question on every writer's mind is, quite simply, what was the purpose of the visit?
The billions of snippets of sadness and bewilderment spinning across the Net confirm who this amazing boy Aaron Swartz was to all of us. It angers me that he did what he did. But if we're going to learn from this, we can't let slide what brought him here.
The real story of the show, the inspiration to me, was that this was the year that interconnectivity became the focus -- not in some new twist on social networks, but in how does the stuff work together to make your real life better, easier, more enjoyable, more productive, more fun.
In this academic year, three in 10 MIT students, including four in 10 graduate students, are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Their student visas expire when they graduate, leaving them with two options, to leave the country or find an existing company to sponsor them for a chance at an H-1B visa.
Nothing good can come from Aaron Swartz's death. But at the very least it should prompt consideration of why such brutality has become a routine part of the American system of justice.
