Reverend Fr. George Thalian, D. D. [വന്ദ്യ ദിവ്യശ്രീ ജോര്‍ജ്ജു് തളിയന്‍ അച്ചന്‍, ഡി. ഡി.] was born at Vathakkad, (North) Thuravoor, near Angamaly, Kingdom of Travancore, to Mr. Ouseph Thalian [ശ്രീ ഔസേപ്പ് തളിയന്‍] and Mrs. Annamma Ouseph [ശ്രീമതി അന്നമ്മ ഔസേപ്പ്]. He studied at Thuravoor, Angamaly, and Perumbavoor, before embracing the priestly vocation. His religious studies were at Sacred Heart Petit Seminary, Ernakulam and St. Paul's Seminary, Trichinopoly, and he was ordained priest on 23rd March 1961.

Throughout his priestly life, he was known for his scrupulous devotion to duty, strict observance of the priestly discipline, and the forthrightness of his opinions and actions.

A secular priest of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam for close to half a century, he served in several parishes of the Archdiocese as vicar and guided the course of several institutions by his advice; some of the parishes which benefited from his service are Udayanapuram, Kodanadu, Pathalam, Thaikkattukara, and Ayathupady. He was the director of catechesis of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam for 15 years, and during this time he oversaw various innovative measures to reach out to the people with the word of God, notably with the use of projectors and other media tools modern for the time.

A prolific writer on religion, ethics, theology, philosophy, culture, history, science, education, and society, he wrote more than a hundred books, remarkable for analysis and insight. On the strength of his published works, he was conferred a Doctorate in Divinity by a University in California in 1990. A book summarising 101 works selected from his oeuvre, `തോണിയും തുഴയും' [The boat and the oar], was published on 23 Apr. 2003. Shortly before his demise, on 18 Dec. 2004, he was honoured by his readers and admirers in a public function under the auspices of the Kerala History Congress; he was bestowed the M. O. Joseph, Nedumkunnam, award on the occasion, for his synoptic book.

He was a dedicated worker in the Catholic labour movement.

He excelled in several skills pertaining to rural life, such as planning dwelling places and plots of land and deciding the apt locations for wells, and his advice was keenly sought by many on such questions. A lover of nature and a lifelong student of natural history, he cared for many animals such as peacocks and rabbits, and he provided a natural habitat to them in his home throughout his life.

During his last days, he served as vicar at St. Martin de Porres Shrine, Angamaly, and when he became too weak to serve, he lived privately in a home at Vengoor, near Kalady, and passed away at Karukutty. He lies buried at Church of Bharatha Rani, Vathakkad (the parish carved out from the Church of St. Augustine, Thuravoor, to which his family now belongs), in Ernakulam, India.
